Softball opens '96 in Californiaby Vic Quick
Snow melting can mean only one thing. It's time for softball season to begin.
The Concordia women's softball team will head west to start their season this weekend in California. Concordia will play in two tournaments hosted by La Verne College and the University of Redlands.
The Cobs will be led by 1995 All-MIAC selections Mindy Schirm and Jen Carlson.
Schirm, junior, hit .352 last year for Concordia. She scored 20 runs and stole 12 bases.
Carlson, also a junior, hit .356 including seven doubles. She had 19 RBIs.
The Cobber women will try to improve their disappointing 9-22 overall record, 8-14 MIAC record of last year.
Steve Baumgartner returns for his tenth season as head coach. During his tenure, Concordia has never fared better than 5th in the conference.
After returning home from California, the Cobbers will play eight non-conference games before they begin conference play on April 13 at Gustavus.
