Softball ends California trip 4-4

The Concordia softball team completed a successful trip to California, returning home Tuesday night with a 4-4 record, including a 2-0 shutout of La Vern.

During the past week, senior Stacey Hoien improved her record to 3-0 after the Cobbers defeated Pamona-Pitzer 9-2 in the second game of their doubleheader on Sunday. Concordia lost the first game 14-5.

In their win, Concordia jumped to a 6-0 lead after scoring in the first three innings.

That was enough support for Hoien, who scattered six hits over seven innings for the victory.

Junior Mindy Schirm went 2 for 4, scored two runs and had two RBIs.

Senior Amy Donahue smashed two doubles in the game and scored one run.

In the loss, Pamona scored early and often in the contest turning it into a rout. Pamona had a five-run outburst in the second inning and scored six runs in the fifth inning.

Concordia pounded out 11 hits, but couldnāt push enough runs across the plate to win.

Junior Kelly Holecek collected two hits in the game and scored one run.

Donahue and Hoien also had two hits each in the game.

On Saturday, the Cobbers won two games to finish in third place of the two-day University of Redlands Tournament.

Concordia crushed Pacific Christian in the third place game 12-1 after losing to Redlands 10-9 in the semifinal.

Hoien once again stymied the opposition for six innings, giving up just one run before junior Jen Carlson came in for mop-up duty.

Junior Kelly Morehead went 2 for 5 in the game while Schirm played well again getting two hits and scoring two runs.

The Cobbers played in the third place game because Redlands scored two runs in the 10th inning to topple the Cobs 10-9.

Concordia posted five runs in the third inning to take back the lead at 6-5.

Redlands tied the score in the top of the sixth, and the game see-sawed back and forth in the later innings as both teams scored to keep pace.

With the score tied at 9-9, Redlands scored twice in the top of the ninth, but Concordia could manage only one run in their half of the inning to lose.

On Friday, the Cobbers lost two games, but beat Pacific Christian 6-1. Junior Heather Reichow led the Cobbers with two round-trippers on the day.

Concordia plays next at MSU April 3 and at Bethel April 10.
