Women finish 3rd at Carleton; men compete at Macalester

by Colin Beltz

The Concordia womenâs track team performed well at the Carleton Invitational April 6, finishing third behind St. Thomas and Carleton. Several individuals performed well including senior Shannon Frey in the hammer throw.

Freyâs throw of 140 feet and seven inches topped the Concordia all-time record and also marked a personal best. The heave also qualified her for the national meet held at the end of the outdoor season.

ãOverall, I think we did really well,ä Frey said of the team. ãConsidering all the injuries weâve had, we also set a lot of personal records.ä

Frey wasnât the only Cobber entering the record books. First-year student Amanda Glas had a throw of 99-11 in the first flight of round one of the hammer throw which earned her the seventh best throw on record at the school.

However, teammate Sam Kapphahn, first-year student, did her one better. In the second flight of round one, her throw flew 103-1 in the air, which placed her sixth all-time at Concordia.

First-year student Erica Bodin scored a place in the record books in the hammer as well. She placed behind Glas with a throw of 76-11.

Becky Kearns finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 34-11.

Other notable finishers were sophomore Molly Ludtke placing fifth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:07.47. Junior Michele Haugen placed third in the 400-meter run with a time of 62.14.

Sophomore Linsey Barnett ran the 3000-meter run in 12:34.40 to set a personal record.

The Cobbers finished with 95.5 points in the meet, behind St. Thomasä 169 and Carletonâs 124.

Frey said that though St. Thomas may be tough to catch, Carleton is already in their sights.

ãWe will be able to beat Carleton by the end of the year,ä she said, ãbut we wonât stop trying to go after St. Thomas.ä

Menâs Track

The men traveled to Macalester April 5 to compete in the Bolstorff Time Trials.

In the long jump event, junior Phil Wishart took home first with a leap of 20-4 1/4, and first-year student Dan Buchholz placed third with 19-1 1/2.

Junior David Jacobsonâs high jump of six feet tied his outdoor personal best and won the event.

Junior Adam Lovehaug raced to a first-place win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.77.

Junior Bill Keating placed second in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:02.81.

First-year students Josh Lowman, Rob Nick and Jeff Swanson also competed in the 800 and each set outdoor personal bests.

Lowman ran the race in 2:06. 94, Nick finished in 2:09.6, while Swanson ran a 2:14.54.

Swanson and Lowman are two of the talented group of first-year students that menâs track coach Garrick Larson has to work with this year. He says this group is the best to come along in quite a while.

ãIâm hoping some of the freshman come around in the outdoor season,ä said Larson. ãThis is the best class of freshman since I have been here.ä

Seniors Aaron Banks and Renee Erickson traveled to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Texas Relays April 4-6. Banks finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 58-10 and 13th in the hammer throw with a personal best of 169-0.

Erickson finished tenth in the javelin with a throw of 143-3.

The women travel to the University of Minnesota Saturday, and the men go to St. Olaf.
