On Line Syllabi:
It is our purpose to graduate skilled professionals who will exert positive Christian leadership in their fields of work and be effective participants in their communities in which they live. Therefore, we encourage students entering our programs to develop all dimensions of their personality, including a positive interest in working with people.
The student majoring in physical education (teaching) learns the rules and techniques of sports; the methods used in teaching and coaching; the mechanics of human motion; and the fundamentals of health, safety, and first aid.
Students have ample opportunity to make practical use of the methods and perspectives they learn in the classroom. They may assist faculty members in teaching general physical education courses, gain actual experience in coaching through practicums, and assist in intramural sports and intercollegiate athletics.
In addition to the health courses offered by our own departments, the curriculum for the health major includes courses in related areas, such as biology and psychology, to prepare students in the entry level competencies of health education specialists
The nonteaching major in physical education include courses focusing on all aspects of wellness and fitness, such as nutrition, exercise and relaxation; a required practicum enables the student to gain hands-on experience outside the classroom.
A broad background of academic work is a valuable asset to the physical education or health major in the job market, especially to those seeking positions in the field of education. Students interested in teaching, therefore, should plan on an additional major or minor.
