 Perspective: by Jerry Pyle

Winners and Losers

It was a pretty good week for Cobber sports. The football team remained unbeaten. The volleyball team is at 6-0 in the MIAC. The golf teams each just capped off outstanding seasons. The soccer teams played hard and the cross country teams acquitted themselves well.

But it is not always like that. And wins are not the whole story. This Sports Information Office has to report on the losses as well as the wins, the sense of failure as well as the joy of success. How some Cobber teams cope with defeat and frequent frustration is often as interesting as how other Concordia teams got to be consistent winners.

And how all of the Concordia athletes learn, or fail to learn, to become whole people, with ethics and studies and athletics kept in their proper perspective, is often the most fascinating story of all. A little harder to cover, perhaps. But they are good stories which I am rapidly learning to appreciate.

We need to all keep in mind the learning that flows from struggle and defeat as we hail the winners and extoll the champions among us.
