Women's basketball 1976-77
Women's basketball may just be the biggest-little success story of the 1976-77 athletic season at Concordia. Coach Collette Folstad began with only three returning starters, eight freshmen and one transfer student. The team was composed mainly of girls who had to learn about each other and who had to learn a new system of basketball.
Coach Folstad attributed the season's achievements to co-captains Cindy Hudson of Hunter, ND, and Becky Dooley of Wheatland, ND, whose leadership qualities were effective in pulling the team together. She attributed it to the dedication and determination of the players.
"They lived basketball," she said. But whether it was team effort, coach Folstad, or (probably) both, Concordia women worked their way through heavy competition to tie for fourth with the University of North Dakota in the Minn-Kota Conference. They finished with a 20-13 won-lost record overall and 4-3 in the conference. They were consolation champions in the North Dakota State University Holiday Tournament and the Minn-Kota Conference Tournament. They placed third in the Lutheran Brotherhood Tournament in Decorah, IA, and finished the season second among small colleges in the state MAIAW tournament.
Concordia played well defensively and were very balanced offensively. When the final scores were tallied, statistically the Cobbers had out rebounded and out-scored their opponents.
Outstanding individual performances were turned in by freshman Kathy Meyer of Mayville, ND, who led the team in rebounds with 393 in season action and 75 in the conference, averaging 10.7 per game. Co-captain Cindy Hudson was second highest rebounder for the Cobbers with 359rebounds and 52 in the conference. She led the team in assists with 78.
Co-captain Dooley was high Cobber scorer with 91 points in conference games. She received honors as a member of the North Country All-Tournament team and the 1977 MinnKota All-Conference team. Vickie Edwall of New Brighton, MN, was also high rebounder and scored on 28 out of 54 field-goal attempts to average nearly 52 percent.
Highlight of the season and of coach Folstad's 14-year career was the state play-offs. Cobber underdogs took revenge on the Minn-Kota Conference champions, Moorhead State University, and pocketed the victory that sent them to the MAIAW State Tournament, where they placed second among small colleges.
Concordia loses only one cager to graduation this year, Vickie Edwall,
who received a bachelor's degree in physical education and health at spring
commencement ceremonies.
