Cobber Women's Basketball 1980-81

Women cagers boast 26-6 season record

Concordia's women cagers captured third place in the AIAW regional tournament after losing to champion Mount Mercy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the semifinals. They posted a 2&6 record for the season under their new coach, Marc Langseth.

According to Langseth, "Collette Folstad was tough to follow. But the athletes made the adjustment to me as I did to the position. From there, the team just took off."

Indeed, the Cobbers did "take off." Six-foot-three-inch transfer, center Sue Ekberg from Bismarck, N.D., and 6-foot veteran Nancy Halda from Mayville, N.D., led the way. The two juniors dominated both ends of the court - Ekberg averaging 15.5 points and 8.8 rebounds a game and Halda achieving averages of 13.9 and 8.2. Both went over the 1,000-point mark for their college careers with a full season yet togo.

Guard Marybeth Stephan, also from Bismarck, broke the Concordia assist record for one season with 138, which surpassed the old record by 40.

Juniors Ekberg and Halda were both selected to the Minnesota all-state and the AIAW Region 6 teams.
