Concordia Spring 1992 Seasons Wrap-Up.

A Cobber Year-End Sports Wrap-Up, and Some Important Passings to Note

BASEBALL TEAM, WOMEN'S GOLF AND TRACK'S KUEHL LEAD SPRING SUCCESSES

Baseball 2nd in MIAC, Earns NCAA Post Season Tourney Invitation:

The Cobber baskeball team battled St. Olaf for the MIAC title before finishing in second place with a 22-12 regular-season record, 12-5 in the MIAC. The Cobber performance led to their first NCAA Regional Tournment appearance since 1983. The Cobbers lost 3-2 to Regional host and winner UW-Oshkosh in the opener and then fell to St. Olaf to take 4th place.

The Cobbers were lead by senior All-MIAC and Academic All-Region pitcher Jeff Morken (Pine Island, 5-3 record, 4.21 ERA), junior All-MIAC and All Region first baseman Brad Keenan (Moorhead, hit .414 with 8 homers), junior All-MIAC outfielder Dan Holgate (Billings, MT, .360 with 20 RBI), and junior All-MIAC infielder Chris Marsden (Fargo, .404 average).

Women's Golf 2nd at NCAA National Meet, Hanson & Cornell All- Americans:

The MIAC champion Cobber women's golf team took second place at the Golf Coaches' NCAA Divsion III National Tournament held in Fayetteville, NC, May 4-6. Sophomore Lisa Hanson (Fosston) finished 2nd in the individual medal competition and senior Kelly Cornell was 4th. Both were named All-Americans.

Cobber Track Teams Impressive Behind Olympic Trials Candidate Kris Kuehl:

The Cobber women's track team placed third at both the MIAC Indoor and Outdoor Track Championships.

The Cobber men's track team posted a strong second-place showing at the MIAC Indoor meet, setting five school records in the process, and finished fourth outdoors.

Senior Kris Kuehl (Storden) was named Concordia's Woman Athlete of the Year after one of the most successful track seasons in Cobber history. Kuehl earned a trip to this summer's Olympic Trials with an NCAA record toss of 180-6 in the discus to win her third straight NCAA Division III national discus title. She also captured the MIAC discus and indoor shot put titles with league-record tosses, was an All-American indoors and outdoors in the shot, and won the MIAC outdoor shot title. She finished up with a 3.62 GPA in Art Education

The men's team was led by senior Jon Ault (Algonquin, IL) who won the MIAC indoor title in the 35# weight and earned All- America honors in that event by finishing 3rd at Nationals. He was also 3rd in the shot indoors at the MIAC and finished 7th at the NCAA. Ault's outdoor season included a school-record 175-1 hammer throw and a 10th place finish at the NCAA.

Others excelling included senior Kristi Farver (Scobey, MT), who finished 5th in the shot at the NCAA National Indoor meet and 7th Outdoors, junior Jason Trichler (Billings, MT), who captured the MIAC steeple chase title and finished 5th in that event at NCAA Nationals, freshman Tracy Berntsen (Hermantown) with a 5th at the NCAA Outdoor in the 400 hurdles, and freshman Merrilee Rutherford (Helena, MT) placing 6th in the javelin at NCAA Nationals.

Tennis Teams Post Winning Seasons:

The Cobber women's tennis team posted a 16-6 season dual record and finished 5th at the MIAC tournament. The Cobber men were 12-8 overall, 6-3 in MIAC duals and 5th in the MIAC race.

The women were led by Lisa Hanson of Willmar, who was 10-5 at No. 1 singles and teamed with senior Sue Swenson (Litchfield) to form one of the league's top No. 1 doubles teams with a 14-3 record. The best record for themen was by Mark Roisum of Willmar, 15-6 at No. 3 singles.

Missy Eidsness Leads Cobber Softball:

The Cobber softball team finished a disappointing 8-24 on the year but got outstanding play all season by several top individuals, particularly senior Missy Eidsness, a senior from Moorhead, who was named All-MIAC after batting .373 for the Cobbers.

Several Cobber athletes earned recognition recently as Academic All-MIAC student athletes. They are:

Jake Christiansen, 1900-1992

Martin Lutter, 1915-1992

This past winter saw the passing of two important figures in Cobber sports. Jake Christiansen died on January 12th and long-time Cobber supporter and professor Martin Lutter passed away March 23.

Jake served as the Cobber football coach from 1941-1968, compiling a record of 143-69-11, and winning 4 MIAC titles and the National Championship in 1964.

Martin Lutter was a successful high school coach prior to becoming a Concordia history professor in 1953. He retired in 1986 but continued in retirement his steadfast devotion as one of Concordia's most devoted fans.

These passings gave all of us an opportunity to pause and appreciate the essence of our work here. And to celebrate the ways in which these two men have touched and enriched the lives of nearly everyone who had the good fortune to know them.

They will be long remembered.

Spring '92 featured outstanding performances by Cobber athletes both on and off the field. Senior Kris Kuehi captured her third consecutive NCAA discus title, the baseball team advanced to the NCAA tournament, the women's golf team finished second at the national Division III tournament, five Cobbers earned All-America status in track, and six Cobbers were recognized for both their academic and athletic excellence.

Kuehi led the track teams, winning MIAC indoor and outdoor shot put titles, MIAC and NCAA discus titles, and placing at the Olympic discus trials. (See inside back cover for story.)

Other track All-Americans were freshman Tracy Berntsen, Hermantown, Minn., who was fifth at the NCAA in the 400 hurdles, while classmate Merrilee Rutherford, Helena, Mont., placed sixth in the javelin. Junior Jason Trichier, Billings, Mont., captured the MIAC steeple chase title and finished fifth in that event at NCAA nationals.

The baseball team finished second in the MIAC, earning an NCAA tournament berth before falling to host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the NCAA opener and ending up 22-~4. The team was led by senior All-MIAC and Academic All-Region pitcher Jeff Morken, Pine Island, Minn., and All-MIAC luniors Brad Keenan, Moorhead; Academic All-MIAC Dan Holgate, Billings, Mont.; and Chris Marsden, Fargo N.D. The MIAC champion women's golf team took second place at the Coaches Division III national meet in Fayetteville, N.C. Sophomore Lisa Hanson, Fosston, Minn., finished second in the individual competition, and senior Kelly Cornell, Thief River Falls, Minn., was fourth.

The women's tennis team posted a 16-6 season record, while the men finished 12-8. Senior Jill Hanson of Wilimar, Minn., shared the league's Chris Evert Award. The Cobber softball team finished at 8-24, but received outstanding play from All-MIAC senior Missy (Ohren) Eidsness, Moorhead, and Academic All-MIAC senior Jenny Mulville, Maple Grove, Minn.
