Concordia's spring sports season produced five top-25 teams in NCAA Division III national competition. Baseball won another MIAC title, finished 2nd at the NCAA Regional and tied for 5th nationally. Women's Golf placed 3rd at their national Division III Tournament.

Baseball Captures MIAC With 30-8 Season Behind All-American
Coste
Coach Bucky Burgau's 17th season at Concordia produced a school record 30 wins, an MIAC title with a 16-4 record and a third trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past four seasons. The Cobbers finsihed 2nd at the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Chris Coste '95, Fargo, N.D., earned his third consecutive MIAC-MVP award and a third consecutive spot on the All-America team. He batted .484 and had a 7-2 record on the mound with a 1.29 ERA. Coste, who played third base when not pitching, graduates having tied or broken seven 7 Cobber career baseball records, including hitting (.442), hits (162), RBI (110), homers (19) and ERA (2.11).
Ron Litzau '95, Park Rapids, capped an outstanding career as a three year starting catcher by being named All-MIAC and first-team All-Region. Litzau hit .339 with 16 RBI and was a vital coach-on-the-field for a young pitching staff.
Jeremy Kovash '95, Moorhead, earned All-MIAC and second-team All-Region honors with his .336 hitting, 35 RBI, 4 homers and solid defense at first base. Those stats, along with his 3.68 GPA in Social Studies Education also earned him Academic All-MIAC status.
Greg Salvevold '97, Moorhead, pitched (2-0, 3.55 ERA) and hit (.362) his way to All-MIAC and second-team All-Region honors. Scott DeBrito '97, Fergus Falls, was also named All-MIAC after hitting .309 with 24 RBI & 30 runs.
Jeremy Holm '97, Fargo, N.D., was All-MIAC for his defense at second, .289 hitting and 35 RBI. Mike Chuba '95, Upsala, hit .533 at the Midwest regional and joined Coste on the All-Tournament Team.
Banks, an Academic All-American with a 3.28 GPA in biology, won the MIAC shot put and discus titles on May 14. The Cobber team finished 8th in the MIAC team standings. Earlier this spring Banks captured the NCAA Indoor shot put title and set a school record in the discus at 167'11.25".
Ryan Williams '97, St. Cloud, earned All-MIAC honors for his second-place finish at the MIAC Meet in the triple jump. That performance, combined with his 3.99 GPA in Music and Biology, led to an Academic All-MIAC award as well.
Brian Grove '95, White Bear Lake, the Cobber track captain, also earned an Academic All-MIAC award for his 3.76 GPA in Biology and his seventh place finish in the MIAC 800 meter run in a time of 1:56.35.
Erickson repeated as the NCAA Division III javelin champion with a toss of 147-11 at the national meet in Northfield on May 27. Her 153'3" throw in the prelims set a school record. Erickson captured her first national crown last year as a freshman. She set an MIAC Meet record May 14 with a throw of 152-5. Erickson also earned Academic All-MIAC honors on the strength of her 3.65 GPA in Accounting.
Berntsen won the MIAC 400 meter hurdles and then placed 2nd at NCAA nationals in that same event, posting a school record time of 61.72 seconds. Berntsen, a three-time track All-American is also a three time Academic All-MIAC honoree, graduating this spring with a 3.59 GPA in Math.
Mollee Ludtke '98, Albert Lea, won the MIAC 800 title May 14. She set the school record in that same event with a 2:15.84 on April 29.
Concordia was led by two All-MIAC honorees, Jenni Carlson '97, Browerville, and Mindy Schirm '97, Correll. Carlson, a pitcher and outfielder, hit .356 with 19 RBI and was the Cobbers' No. 3 pitcher. Carlson, with a 3.60 GPA in Elementary Ed., was also named Academic All-MIAC. Schirm hit .352 for the Cobbers, had 13 RBI, and scored 20 runs. Lynn Iverson '96, Northfield, who was thrown into the No. 1 pitching spot after Hoien's injury, played well also. She earned Academic All- MIAC honors with a 3.85 GPA in International Relations.
Wall takes over a young tennis team that finished 9-10 overall, 5-6 and 6th place in the MIAC. Molly Hansen '97, Eagan, was the top Cobber player this spring, posting a 10-10 record at No. 1 singles. The Cobber men's tennis team finished 7-11 overall, 3-7 and tied for 8th in the MIAC. Eric Holmstrom '98, Grand Rapids, led the team with a 12-7 record at No. 2 singles.
