Concordia dropped their first match of the season, losing 7-2 to perennial MIAC champion Gustavus. The highlight of the match for the Cobbers was Erica Tollefson's (So., Madison, Minn.) huge come-from-behind victory over the Gusties Ellen Anderson 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Anderson, the defending MIAC #1 singles champ and ranked 13th in the nation in the preseason poll - had a perfect 26-0 record in MIAC matches coming into the day. Tollefson lost the first set before rallying in the second, and then prevailing in the super tie-breaker 10-8. Tollefson is currently 3-0 on the season. As a team, Gustavus has won the last nine MIAC titles and are ranked seventh in the preseason NCAA Division III poll. Tollefson's victory along with the win by doubles team of Liz Meschke (So., Pine River, Minn.) and Danita Olson (Sr., Champlin, Minn.) mark the first time that the Gusties have lost an individual or doubles match to a MIAC foe this year. Meschke and Olson won their match 9-8 to up their record to 3-0 as well. Concordia will host MSU-Morhead on Wednesday, March 20th at 6:30pm in the Olson Forum. 3/15 Cobbers Match With Macalester Has Been Canceled.
3/09 Cobbers Slam St. Olaf
8-1.
Concordia won the first six matches, and cruised to an 8-1 win over conference for St. Olaf. The Cobbers push their overall record on the season to a perfect 2-0. It is the first time since the 1995 season that Concordia has started the year with two wins. The tone of the match was set early, as Concordia won all three doubles matches. The number one doubles team of Erica Tollefson (So., Madison, Minn.) and Natalie Hausia (Sr., Honolulu, Hawa.) won their set 8-5, while the other two doubles teams coasted to similar 8-4 wins. In singles, Concordia won two of the three matches that were decided by the super tie-breaker. The most dramatic match was at the number two spot, where Hausia came back from losing the first set to capture the next two 6-4 and 10-9 in the tie-breaker. Tollefson won in straight sets from the number one singles position 6-2, 6-4. The other straight set victor for Concordia was Danita Olson (Sr., Champlin, Minn.), playing in the number three singles position, sailing to a 6-2, 6-2 win. Both Jessica Strey (So., St. Peter, Minn.) and Miriam Wilhelm (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) won their matches in the tie-breaker. The tandem also combined for an 8-4 victory in doubles.
