Concordia came back from a 1-0 first period deficit to win 3-2 at St. Olaf tonight. The Cobbers improved to 5-0 and sit atop the MIAC with 10 points. St. Olaf fell to 2-3 in the MIAC, 4-4 overall. Concordia, now 5-1-1 overall, plays at St. Olaf again Saturday at 2:30.

St. Olaf jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first period, but could not hold on as Concordia rallied back for a 3-2 victory to remain unbeaten in conference play. The game showcased two of the MIAC’s top goaltenders in St. Olaf’s P.T. Haider (Centennial, Minn.) and Concordia’s Bryan Howard. Both tenders played well, as Haider made 33 saves on 36 shots and Howard made 30 saves on 32 shots.
St. Olaf had a few chances in the third period to tie up the game, but came up short. The Oles were unable to get any quality scoring opportunities on a power play with seven minutes remaining as the Cobber penalty kill kept the Oles on the perimeter and away from the net. The Oles had one last rush late in the game when they pulled their goaltender for a six on five advantage. Both teams battled for a loose puck in front of the net by with 17 seconds remaining until Howard smothered it. A shot of the following face-off nearly trickled in, but a Cobber defenseman collected it and cleared the zone to end the game.
The game was scoreless for much of the first period until St. Olaf went on the power play late in the first period. First-year Nick Hanson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) received a pass from Ryan Sisson (Eagan, Minn.) and fired a shot towards the net. Junior Jason Haider (Centennial, Minn.), who was screening in front of the net, redirected the shot to the lower left corner for the games first goal.
In the second period a defensive breakdown gave Concordia’s Brady Burgess an open path toward the goal, which he took and capitalized on to tie the game at one. The Cobbers took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period when Bryan Knutson fired a shot through traffic past Haider. However, the Oles weren’t done yet. It only took 24 seconds for St. Olaf to answer when a great give and go off a face-off allowed Jake Johnston to tie the game at two.
The third period seemed to be missing the fast tempo of the previous
two periods, but Concordia’s Mike Guertin one-timed a pass from Antonio
Castandeda for the game-winning goal. The Cobbers improved to 5-0, 5-1-1
overall, and sit atop the MIAC with 10 points. St. Olaf fell to 2-3 in
the MIAC, 4-4 overall. The teams play again Saturday at 2:30.
