St. Olaf's Deuth, St. Thomas' Sundberg, Bethel's Richards
get MIAC Baseball Player of Week honors
St. Olaf's Rob Deuth was named MIAC Pitcher of the Week and St. Thomas 1B-DH Nate Sundberg and Bethel 1B Dan Richards were named MIAC Co-Players of the Week Monday for games of April 24-29.
Deuth, a senior righthander from Northfield, was 2-0 last week with complete-game victories over vs St. Mary's (6-3) and Augsburg that moved him to 5-0 in MIAC games. In 14 innings he allowed 11 hits, five earned runs and struck out 19. He's helped the 29-3 Oles to a No. 14 national ranking and a share of the conference lead with two games to play.
Sundberg, a junior from Red Wing, led St. Thomas to a 6-0 week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. In five games last week, he batted .600 (12-for-20) with 15 RBI, eight runs scored, five home runs and three doubles, including a grand slam vs. Augsburg. In UST's current 12-game winning streak, Sundberg has played 10 games and batted .561 (23-of-41) with 30 RBI, eight home runs, four doubles and 19 runs scored. In 16 MIAC games Sundberg is batting .484 with 30 hits and 31 RBI. He's led a UST offense that has outscored MIAC foes 160-32 in their last 10 games. The Tommies, 24-9 overall, can get a share of the MIAC Championship -- the school's fifth consecutive outright or shared conference baseball title -- if they sweep Concordia Monday in Moorhead.
Richards, a junior from Bloomington, Minn., and Jefferson High, helped
Bethel clinch an MIAC playoff berth with with five wins last week that
let them establish a school-record 11-game winning streak. In sweeps of
Macalester and Carleton and a split with Concordia, Richards batted .524
with five home runs -- three in the sweep at Carleton -- 10 RBI, 12 runs,
one double, with no errors in 44 chances in the field. Bethel is 25-13-1
going into Monday's doubleheader vs. Hamline.

Bethel shortstop Jon Nuss and Hamline' LF-pitcher Troy Urdahl
Nuss (JR-Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS ) broke out of a slump with several clutch at-bats in Bethel's sweep of St. Mary's on Saturday. In game one, Nuss hit a two-run homer to lead Bethel to a 4-3 win. In game two, he hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh to give the Royals a 9-7 lead in a come-from-behind victory. For the series with St. Mary's, the transfer from the University of Minnesota was 4-for-5 (two doubles, one HR, six RBI, three runs). On the week, Nuss was 5-for-13 (.385) with six runs scored and seven RBI. He also had four putouts, 19 assists, and three errors from his shortstop position. Bethel has won seven in a row to climb into MIAC playoff contention.
Urdahl (JR-Litchfield, Minn.) led Hamline to a 3-3 record in doubleheaders
with Carleton, Concordia and Augsburg. He batted .526 (10-for-19) with
one HR, three runs, and six RBI. Urdahl's home run was a three-run shot
that helped the Pipers to an 8-6 victory over Augsburg. Urdahl then went
to the mound in game two and earned a complete game, 8-4 victory. The complete-game
victory was the second of the week for Urdahl, as he also pitched Hamline
to a 3-2 victory over Carleton. For the week on the mound, Urdahl went
14 innings, giving up 16 hits and 6 runs, while striking out 10. Urdahl
also played errorless-ball defensively, handling nine chances without a
miscue.

2000 MIAC Baseball Players of
the Week

Macalester senior pitcher Christian Blanck and St. Olaf senior shortstop Tim Thoreson were named MIAC Pitcher and Player of the Week today for games of April 10-17.
Blanck (SR-Mpls./South) won both of his starts to improve to 5-0 on the season and keep the Scots in the MIAC title race. He threw a one-hitter in an 8-1 win last Tuesday over Carleton, then beat St. Mary's 2-1 Monday on a five-hitter. Blanck allowed a leadoff triple in the first inning but held the Knights hitless the rest of the way while walking just one batter and striking out five. Carleton's only run was unearned. He struck out seven and didn't walk anyone in beating St. Mary's. Blanck has a 3.17 ERA this season with 40 strikeouts and only nine walks in 48 innings. Macalester is 7-1, in second place in the conference.
Thoreson (SR-West St. Paul) batted .687 (11-for-16) with 17 RBI as the
Oles swept Bethel and Gustavus in a 4-0 week to move into first place in
the MIAC at 9-1. Thoreson also scored eight runs and had three HRs, two
doubles and a triple for a slugging percentage of 1.500. The Oles are 22-2
and ranked 15th nationally in Division III.

Players of the week
Brad Mazer, Gustavus and Brian Sprout, St. Olaf
Gustavus' Brad Mazer, sophomore, catcher, Orono, Minnesota, Orono H.S.
Mazer went 10-for-18 on the week (.555) as Gustavus went 2-2 with two
losses to St. Thomas (1-5, 3-9) and two wins against Carleton (18-17, 14-8).
Mazer had a very big series against Carleton as he went 9-for-11 in the
two games with two home runs and 6 rbi. Brad was 6-for-7 in the first game
with a double, a home run, three rbi and three runs scored and 3-for-4
in the second game with a home run, three rbi and three runs scored. He
also threw two players out attempting to steal second base on the day.
Mazer is hitting .480 (12-25) in MIAC play through six games and he is
hitting .492 overall (32-65) through 18 games. Gustavus is currently 8-10
overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.
Brian Sprout of St. Olaf (SO, 3B Lake City, MN Lake City HS)
Brian went 9 for 16 (.563) vs. Concordia and Hamline last week.
He hit 4 doubles, 3 home runs, scored eight runs, had 7 RBI, and stole
2 bases. Brian made his first error of the season against Hamline. Through
six games Brian is hitting .440 and slugging 1.080 in the MIAC. The Oles
were 4-0 last week.
Pitcher of the week
Bryan Toov, St. Thomas
Bryan Toov, St. Thomas, senior, RHP, Austin
Toov started Saturday's first game at Bethel and retired 15 of the 17
batters he faced, including two strikeouts, as he allowed no runs, two
hits and no walks in five innings in a 7-0 victory. Toov, coming back from
an arm injury that sidelined him for most of 1999, has struck out 16 and
walked only two with a 2.00 ERA in 27 innings this season. UST pitchers
have allowed just five earned runs in 49 innings in the conference (0.92
ERA) in a 5-1 start.

2000 MIAC Baseball Players of
the Week

Concordia's Chad Felstul was named MIAC Player of the Week and St. Olaf's Charlie Brookins was named MIAC Pitcher of the Week for their play in the April 1 conference doubleheaders.
Concordia's Chad Felstul (So., Morris, Minn.) went 7-for-9 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored in the Cobbers' 20-5, 4-1 sweep at Carleton Saturday. He was 3-for-3 at the plate in the second game, and his first-inning bases-loaded single drove in the first two runs of the game. Felstul is hitting .432 for the Cobbers through nine games.
St. Olaf pitcher Charlie Brookins (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park
HS) threw a four-hit shutout on the road to beat defending champion St.
Thomas Saturday in game one of the Oles' doubleheader split (4-0 win, 1-0
loss in 14 innings). It was the first time St. Thomas was shutout in MIAC
play in 47 games since St. Olaf's Colin Brackeen did it in 1997. Brookins
struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Three St. Olaf pitchers allowed
just one run in 21 innings of the doubleheader. The Oles are ranked 15th
nationally and are 16-2.
