The Headline:
Rock Solid "D" vs. High Octane "O"
(Concordia's league leading defense against St. John's second rated
offense)
The Teams :
Concordia (5-3-1, 9-6-1)
The Cobbers are coming off their first MIAC road victory of the year,
a 2-0 shutout of Bethel. In that game Gennard
Lombardozzi's (Jr., Billings, MT) diving header in the 11th minute
put Concordia up to stay. Paul Poduska
(Fort Collins, CO) added the insurance goal in the second half. Kris
Overby (Fr., Fargo, ND) collected his seventh shutout of the season,
one more and he will tie the school record for shutouts in a season. Concordia
has only given up seven goals in conference play, tied for the league lead.
The Cobbers can finish as high as third in the MIAC with a win and a St.
Olaf loss to Carleton, or as low as sixth with a loss. Concordia is also
shooting for a 10 win season.
St. John's (6-3-0, 12-5-0)
St. John's is coming off a 6-1 thumping of St. Olaf. In that game Ben
Bahr (So., Brooklyn Park, MN) scored just 16 seconds into the game, one
of the fastest goals in school history. St. John's exploded for five goals
in the second half after going into the break tied at one. It was the third
time this season that the Johnnies have scored five goals in a half. They
also accomplished the feat against Augsburg in the first half and against
Bethel in the second half. St. John's has scored 45 goals so far this season
and have over 20 players with at least one point. St. John's can finish
as high as third in the MIAC with a win today or as low as tied for fifth
with a loss.
The History:
St. John's Leads the Series 6-5-2
Last year's 4-2 Concordia win was the first time since 1992, when Jim
Cella took over at Concordia, that a Concordia/St. John's game has been
determined by more than one goal.
5 Years Ago: Concordia 2 St. John's 1 OT
Forrest Olson (Fargo, ND) finished
off a great counterattack play from midfield as the Cobbers beat the Johnnies
in overtime. The win helped Concordia win their first MIAC title in school
history.
