5/01 Concordia Drops a Pair to
St. Thomas 12-3, 9-2.
Series Summary -
Concordia dropped a pair of games to league-leading St. Thomas, 12-3
and 9-2 in Moorhead. In both games the Cobbers stayed close until late
in the fourth inning when the Tommies scored multiple runs to blow the
games open.
In the first game, St. Thomas jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the opening frame. Concordia cut the lead to 6-3 in the third inning before the Tommies used a two-run fourth to extend the lead to five runs. After the fourth the Cobbers were never able to mount a comeback, with their best chance coming in the sixth when Cobber senior Heather Stohs (Perham, Minn.) doubled, then Kristina Brakke (Moorhead, Minn.) and Becky Bouwman (So., Glenwood, Minn.) walked to load the bases. All three Concordia runners were stranded when St. Thomas starter Casey Curson finished the inning and the game with a strikeout.
Curson picked up the win allowing only four hits in six innings. Christine Moen (Sr., Glenwood, Minn.) was the pitcher of record for Concordia, going six innings and giving up nine earned runs. Cobber catcher Jill Pontius (Jr., Eagle Bend, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.
Concordia struck first in game two, and took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Tommies struck for three runs in the top half of the inning, and never relinquished the lead. The game stayed close until the seventh inning when St. Thomas was able to score five times. Three of the runs were unearned as the Cobbers committed two costly errors in the inning.
Amanda Schindeldecker (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) was instrumental on both sides of the field in the second game. She pitched all seven innings, giving up only three earned runs, and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run batted in. For Schindeldecker it was only her third career start and drops her record to 1-2. Stacy Tamble went the distance for St. Thomas in the second game. She upped her record on the year to 14-3.
With the two defeats, Concordia falls below .500 in the MIAC for the first time all season. They now stand at 7-9 in conference play and 10-10 overall. St. Thomas continues to duel with St. Mary's for the league title, as they improve to 17-1 in the MIAC and 30-6 overall.
The Cobbers will host a pair of series on Friday and Saturday when St.
Olaf and St. Ben's visit Moorhead. The Cobbers will end their season on
Monday, May 5th when they play St. Kate's at St. Ben's, in a doubleheader
that was originally scheduled to be played on April 30th.
