1/27 Concordia Loses at Home
to Augsburg 85-66.
Concordia stumbled out of the gate, let Augsburg jump to a 25 point
halftime lead and ended up losing 85-66. Augsburg shot an unbelievable
70% (17-for24) from the field in the first half. The Cobbers could
not stop the potent Auggie attack, and could not find the range at their
own offensive end. Augsburg's Travis Hinze did not miss a shot in the first
half. He made every shot he threw up which included four 3-pointers and
two free throws. He finished with 14 points in the half, and a game-high
20 for the full 40 minutes.
In the second half the Cobbers started to find the range and outscored
Augsburg 41-35. However, they could not dig themselves out of the first
half hole and had to settle for their sixth conference loss of tyhe season.
Concordia was led by Jeff Ubben who scored 13 points and hauled in six
rebounds.
The Cobbers slide back to the .500 mark in conference play at 6-6, and
slip to 9-7 overall. Augsburg stops their two-game losing streak and goes
to 9-3 in the MIAC and 10-6 overall. Concordia will play at St. Olaf on
Monday, January 29th at 7:30.

Concordia vs. Augsburg Game Day Preview
The Headline: Cobbers Battle Through Dog Days of January
The Teams:
Concordia (6-5 in the MIAC, 9-6 Overall)
After having played 8 games in 18 days, the long days of January are
almost over. On Wednesday Concordia reached out and stopped their two-game
MIAC slide, when they defeated Hamline 89-76. All five Concordia starters
finished with 10 or more points. Junior guard Robb Flint (Dilworth, MN)
had a career-high 15 points to go along with 6 assists. The win puts the
Cobbers in the thick of the playoff
race, as the top six teams make the MIAC playoffs this year.
Augsburg (8-3 in the MIAC, 9-6 Overall)
Augsburg is in the middle of a tough stretch. They have lost their
last two, and three of their last four. This run came after the Auggies
started the season with a perfect 7-0 mark. They are currently in a three-way
tie for second place in the MIAC. After today they will finish the MIAC
season with five-of-eight home games. The Auggie statistical leaders are
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, MN) scoring (14.3 ppg), Matt Davis (Sr.,
Marshall, MN) rebounding (8.5 rpg) and Josh Natzel (Jr., St. Louis
Park, MN) assists (33). The most explosive player might be Tommy Chatman
(Sr., Shakopee, MN) who threw down several highlight-reel jams last time
the two teams played.

The Key Statistic: Rebounds
Augsburg is leading the MIAC in rebounding with an average of 37 boards
per game. Concordia ranks fifth, hauling in just over 34 per game. In the
first game between the two teams Augsburg won the battle of the boards
34-24, and won the game 82-56. The Auggies had 11 offensive rebounds, which
led to numerous second-chance points. In Concordia’s five MIAC losses,
they have been outrebounded all but one time.
The Key Match-Up: Joe Snowden – CC vs.
Travis Hinze – Aug
This is the battle of leading scoring guards. Both players lead their
respective teams in scoring. Snowden averages 17.5 ppg, and Hinze averages
14.3 ppg. Snowden is seventh in the MIAC in scoring and Hinze is eighth.
Hinze is leading the MIAC in 3-point shooting, shooting 57% from beyond
the arc, while Snowden is leading the Cobbers at just under 40% from long
range.
The Fantasy Match-Up : Daimen Crump
– CC vs. Devean George – Aug
1995-97
Two of the premiere players in the league in their day. The two went
head-to-head four times in their careers. Crump actually held the
edge in their four match-ups as he averaged 19 points and 7 rebounds. The
Cobbers held an advantage in the win column as well, as they were 3-1 in
those games. George is now a member of the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers
and recently received a rare start. Since joining the Lakers last year
he has averaged 2.8 ppg for the past two seasons. His career-high came
against Golden State last April when he scored 14. Oh for one more night
from the 1996 season!
The History: Augsburg
Leads the Series 66-54
Last year Augsburg swept the series, winning 68-64 at home and 83-79
in Memorial Auditorium. The series has been marked by streaks. Augsburg
is currently in a 8-0 run and before that the Cobbers won 9 of 10 dating
back to the 1992-93 season.
