2/10 Concordia Can't Clinch Playoff
Spot, Loses to Macalester 83-69.
Concordia could never get their offense on track, and missed an opportunity
to clinch a playoff berth by losing to Macalester 83-69. The Scots opened
the game with an 11-4 run and carried that seven point margin throughout
the game. The Cobbers were led by Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) who
scored 17 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Macalester's Ben VanThorre
led all scorers with 21 points.
Concordia (9-8, 12-9) had a chance to knock Macalester (7-10, 9-11) out of the playoffs with a victory but were plagued by an inconsistent offense and cold shooting from the free throw line. After the opening eight minutes the Cobbers never came within ten points of the hot shooting Scots. Macalester pounded the ball inside repeatedly, and used a tough inside game to power to a 13 point halftime lead.
After the break Concordia cut the lead to 10 but then missed several chances at the free throw line to close the gap. For the half Concordia shot 42 percent (6-for-14) from the line. Macalester also recieved strong play from Doug Benson who finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Four Cobbers scored in double figures. Besides Copper's 17, Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead, MN) finished with 16 and Mike Syverson (Jr., Twin Valley, MN) and Chris Thomas (So., Sioux Falls, SD) both added 10.
Concordia will travel to Winona on Monday to take on St. Mary's in another "win and your in" situation for the conference playoffs. After the game on Monday the Cobbers have an away game against St. John's and host Bethel in the season finale.

Concordia vs. Macalester Game Day Preview
The Headline: MIAC Playoff Spot On the Line
The Teams:
Concordia (9-7 in the MIAC, 12-8 Overall)
Macalester (6-10 in the MIAC, 8-11 Overall)
The Playoff Picture:
Concordia's magic number to make the six-team
MIAC playoff is one. Any win by the Cobbers or a loss by seventh-place
Macalester, and the Cobbers will get an invitation for the playoffs. This
set-up makes today's game a must-win for the Scots. If Concordia wins,
they clinch the last playoff spot and have three games left to take a shot
at fifth place. The only team that could displace the Cobbers for the sixth
spot is Macalester, all other teams have been eliminated. Concordia is
coming off a 83-69 loss to St. Thomas, and they are 3-2 in their last five
games. They have two road games remaining - against St. Mary's and league-leading
St. John's. They play their final game of the season at home against Bethel
next Saturday. Macalester is coming off a one-point loss to Gustavus, and
are 1-4 in their last five games. After today they will play home games
against St. Thomas and St. Mary's, and then they will take the long trip
down Snelling Avenue to take on Hamline.

The Key Statistic:
Turnovers
Concordia is averaging 17 turnovers per game
in MIAC play. In their nine wins they average 16 turnovers, while in their
six losses they cough it up 20 times per game. Turnovers often lead to
points, and four extra turnovers in the losses could equate to giving their
opponents eight extra points. In their last five conference wins the Cobbers
have not turned the ball over more than 15 times. In their last four losses
they have turned the ball over 76 times. Macalester is coming into the
game with a similar average, turning the ball over more than 18 times per
game. In their one-point loss to Gustavus they turned the ball over 22
times, compared to the Gusties 14 turnovers.
The Key Match-Up: Jeff
Ubben - CC vs. Doug Benson/ Ben Van Thorre - MAC
The battle of the "big men in the middle". Jeff
Ubben is one of the focal points in the Cobber offense. Case in point -
when he scores in double figures the Cobbers are 8-2. When he is held under
10, Concordia flounders at a 1-4 clip. His work in the lane opens up the
wings for Concordia's shooters to set up shop. He also opens space for
other people to move in the paint. Doug Benson leads Macalester in rebounding
and is second in scoring. Ben Van Thorre is second in rebounds and third
in scoring. No other player on the team is within 45 rebounds of these
two. These two allow the three athletic guards to run the court by making
outlet passes and hauling in offensive rebounds. In the Cobbers overtime
win in January, the two Scot big men were held to a combined eight rebounds.
For the game Concordia outrebounded Macalester 40-29.
The History: Concordia
Leads the Series 75-55.
Concordia broke a streak of three straight losses
to Macalester when they posted a 68-61 victory on January 13th. The Scots
hold a 5-2 advantage in the last seven meetings. The longest win
streak in the series belongs to Concordia when they rattled off 12 wins
in a row from 1987 to 1983. The first game between the two took place on
February 20th in 1922. The Cobbers won 17-14.
