1/27 Concordia Downs St. John's
4-2, Remains Atop the MIAC.
Concordia scored two goals in the third period to pull awat from St.
John's 4-2. The two teams were tied after two periods before the Cobbers
were able to pull away, and remain atop the MIAC. Jon Tranby (Sr., Moorhead,
MN) scored the game-winner at 2:53 of the third period, and St. John's
would have no answer. Mark Schiller (Sr., Detroit Lakes, MN) scored one
goal and assisted on two others to lead Concordia.
Concordia, coming off last night's 3-2 loss, opened the scoring when captain Mike Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) scored his ninth goal of the year at 9:52. Less than two minutes later, the Johnnies equalized when Chad Helmer finished off a pass from John Konrad. St. John's took the lead only 1:30 after the tying goal as Kevin Willey scored to make it 2-1. Concordia continually peppered St. John's goalie Adam Laaksonen in the second period before finally breaking through at the 11:32 mark when Jack Steen (So., Moorhead, MN) scored an even strength goal.
That set the stage for Concordia's decisive third period. The Johnnies took control early in the third period only to be derailed by two penalties right before each of Concordia's goals. The Cobbers first goal of the period came 13 seconds after St. John's had killed off a power play. The second goal came 6 seconds after the the Johnnies penalty kill unit had done their job. St. John's had several chances to score after the final goal at 8:32 but each time they were denied by Concordia's All-American goaltender Bryan Howard (Gold River, CA). Howard had 25 saves on the afternoon and upped his league leading win total to eight. St. John's goalie Adam Laaksonen also made 25 saves for the game. The two teams combined for 29 penalties and 82 penalty minutes.
Concordia keeps on track fo their first MIAC title since the 1986-87 season by improving to 8-3-1 in the MIAC. They are the first MIAC team to crack the 10-win barrier this year as they move to 10-7-2. St. John's, with the weekend split, stands at 5-4-1 in the MIAC and 8-10-1 overall. The Cobbers stay at home and host Gustavus on Friday, February 2nd at 7:00 and Saturday, February 3rd at 2:00.

Concordia vs. St. John's Game Day Preview
The Headline: Crunch Time!
The Teams:
Concordia (7-3-1 in the MIAC, 9-7-2 Overall)
The sound you hear is the rest of the MIAC coming back into the title
chase. After last night's loss, the Cobbers now stand with three losses
and one tie. That is the same blemish record as Bethel and
St. John's. St. Thomas is tucked closely behind with three losses and
two ties. Concordia has two series remaining in the MIAC, both at home.
They will play Gustavus and Hamline, the bottom two teams in the conference.
A win today could go a long way in helping the Cobbers secure their first
MIAC title since the 1986-87 season. That year was coach Steve Baumgartner's
first year as head coach.
St. John’s (5-3-1 in the MIAC, 8-9-1 Overall)
St. John's is now in the thick of the MIAC race and controls its own
destiny. If they win out, they are assured of at least a tie for the conference
title. This comes after the Johnnies had to be resuscitated
following their opening two-game loss to Bethel. St. John's has remaining
series against Hamline, St. Mary's and St. Olaf. They are looking to capture
their sixth straight MIAC playoff appearance and first MIAC title since
the 1997 season.

This season Concordia is 4-1 in MIAC games on Saturday.
This season St. John's is 1-2-1 in MIAC games on Saturday.
Last year the Cobbers were 5-2-1, while the Johnnies were 3-2-3.
In the past ten years the teams are an even 4-4-2 in the second game
of the series.
