Concordia fell behind early, but proceeded to rattle off three first-period
goals and went on to beat Hamline 4-1. The Cobbers received two goals from
Jason DiMatteo (Sr., Anchorage, AK) and stellar goaltending from Bryan
Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) to move one step closer to clinching home
ice in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.
Tim Steffen took advantage of a defensive lapse, and beat Howard on a breakaway at 2:15 of the first period. Concordia (10-4-1, 13-9-2) answered quickly when Mark Schiller (Sr., Detroit Lakes, MN) slammed home a rebound only 59 seconds later. DiMatteo scored the first of his pair of goals at 7:33 on the power play. Once again Hamline goaltender Andy Gross had trouble corralling the initial shot and DiMatteo capitalized on the giveaway. The teams traded scoring chances after that with Howard making several spectacular breakaway and point-blank saves. After a Howard denial on a breakaway Concordia pushed the puck to center ice where Tony Castaneda (So., Moorhead, MN) picked it up and drove deep in to the Piper. After putting on a nifty fake and go move, he went behind the net and set up a breaking Andy Vix (Fr., Rochester, MN) for the third Cobber goal with under a minute left in the period.
Concordia would only score one more goal as DiMatteo wrapped around his second tally of the night at 16:46 of the second period. Hamline (4-11-0, 11-13-0) continued to receive odd man and breakawy chances but were continually stoned by Howard. The Cobber goalie stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced, while Piper goalie made 32 saves for the game.
The two teams play again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 in the series finale.
A win by Concordia and they would clinch home ice for the first round in
the MIAC playoffs.

The Headline: Concordia Looks to Secure Home Ice!
The Teams:
Concordia (9-4-1 in the MIAC, 12-9-2 Overall)
Concordia is in the hunt for second place, and a chance to host a first
round MIAC Playoff game. There are many scenarios that can take place for
the Cobbers to finish second, but the easiest way is to sweep Hamline and
lock up the spot all by themselves. Concordia is coming off a pair of midweek
games against UM-Crookston. On Wednesday they dropped a defensive battle
4-2 and the week before they got the better of the Golden Eagles 5-4. In
both games the Cobbers were behind by two late in the second period. In
the first game Concordia scored three goals in the final 22 minutes to
take the game. In the second contest the Cobbers could only get to within
one before the Golden Eagles scored an empty net goal. Brady Burgess is
the hottest Cobber. He has scored at least one goal in the last four games.
During that streak he has six points on five goals and one assist. He is
currently second on the team in scoring with 21 points. Mike Gast leads
the team with 24 points. The Cobbers have a balanced attack this year,
as they have ten players in double figures in scoring. The leader in plus/minus
is Toby Schneider who is at +15. Goaltender Bryan Howard continues to be
the cream of the crop in the MIAC. Although he has recently slipped to
second in goals against in the league, his overall GA of 2.69 puts him
among the leaders in Division III. After this year he will hold the
school record in most career shutouts, most shutouts in a season, lowest
career goals against, most wins in a career and just about every goaltending
category that has been created. Tonight will be the start of the last series
for five seniors on the team. In their four seasons they have an overall
record of 56-44-8 and a MIAC slate of 38-19-5. What really sets this class
apart is their postseason run. They will have made the MIAC playoffs in
three of their four years and currently own a 6-3-1 mark in the MIAC
tournament and are defending MIAC Playoff Champions.
Hamline (4-10-0 in the MIAC, 11-12-1 Overall)
Hamline enters tonight's game on a two-game win streak. They swept
Gustavus last weekend 4-3 in OT and 4-2. In that series. the Pipers finally
received a steady hand in goal from two different players and scored key
goals down the stretch to beat the Gusties. The two goalies that picked
up wins in the series were sophomores Andy Gross and Robert Fuchs. Offensively,
the Pipers were led by Brice Parks and Donovan Meade. Parks is also the
leading scorer for Hamline this season as he has 33 points. The second
leading scorer is Peter Contardo with 25 points. Hamline comes in
to the series with an overall record of 11-12-0 and has a chance to finish
the season with a winning record, a feat that hasn't been done since the
1983-84 season. They finished fourth in the MIAC that year, the highest
finish ever for the Pipers. Hamline has two players on the team from Alaska.
Both Parks and teammate Ethan Allen are from the Frontier State. Tonight
will be a homecoming for Ben Shaw who is from Fergus Falls. Shaw
is a sophomore defenseman for the Pipers.
The History: Concordia Leads the Series

Concordia has won the last nine meetings between the teams and 15 of
the last 16. Last year the Cobbers swept the series in St. Paul by scores
of 6-0 and 8-1. Brady Burgess had a goal and an assist in each game to
lead the Cobbers in the opening weekend of the season. The series
started in 1958. Hamline won the inaugural game 5-0. The Pipers went on
to own the early years of the series, as they won 15 of the first 19 games
played between the two schools. The 1958 Cobber team was coached by Don
Brose, a Concordia alum, who went on to coach at MSU-Mankato. Brose took
then Mankato Statel from a struggling Division III team to one of the top
five teams in the WCHA in Division I. Last year was Don Brose's last season
as a coach and he took the Mavericks to their first-ever appearance in
the WCHA Final Five Tournament.
