1/31 Concordia Overpowers St.
Kate's 96-56.
Sara Spears scores her 1,000th point.
Concordia turned up the heat to overpower St. Kate's 96-56 on a night
where Cobber women's basketball history welcomed a new member of the 1,000
point club. Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) free throw with just over 11
minutes to play made her the 17th player in the history of Concordia women's
basketball to reach the 1,000 point mark. She joins teammate Brandi Myers
(Sr, Glyndon, DGF High School) in the elite club, as Myers pulled
off the feat in the first game this season between the two teams.
Concordia started the game on a 12-0 run, and moved the gap to 39-13 before St. Kate's made a mini-run and closed the first half at 41-19. The Cobbers used the six 3-point shot baskets to put the Wildcats down in the first half. First year player Trisha Steinborn (Fr., Jamestown, ND) stepped up and drilled three long range shots and helped the Cobbers bolt from the opening tip. Brandi Myers chipped in with her usual 3-point accuracy, and finished the half with 10 points. Sara Spears inched towards the century mark by pounding nine first half points.
The only suspense in the second half came in anticipation of the history-making basket. Spears scored an early basket from inside, and then waited a full eight minutes before ending the tension with two made free throws. She finished the game with the exactly 13 points and 10 rebounds. It is her fidth double-double of the season. Brandi Myers led all scorers as she finished with a game-high 17 points. Four Cobbers scored in double-digits, besides Spears and Myers, Mandy Berggren (Jr., Cokato, MN) and Trisha Steinborn both added 13 points. Myers moved up to eighth place on the school career scoring list, and now has 1,208 for her career.
Concordia records their seventh straight victory and ups their MIAC record to 12-2, and 14-3 overall. St. Kate's remains winless on the year as they fall to 0-13 in league play and 0-16 overall.
The Cobbers turn around and play at St. Olaf tomorrow night in a game that was postponed from Monday night. They return home on Saturday at 1:00 for a critical showdown with Carleton.

Concordia vs. St. Kate's Game Day Preview
The Headline: Cobbers Ready For Key Stretch Run
The Teams:
Concordia (11-2 in the MIAC, 13-3 Overall)
Concordia is glad to finally be playing. After spending 4 1/2 hours
on a bus on Monday, the Cobbers will have the chance to play five games
in the next eight days. This grueling stretch is courtesy of an ice storm
that blew through southern Minnesota, and postponed all of Monday's MIAC
games. Concordia received word, as they were about to go through St. Cloud.
They turned the bus around, and will make-up the game tomorrow at 5:00.
Concordia is on a six-game winning streak, and has two players among the
leaders in Division III. Brandi Myers is fourth in steals and seventh in
3-point field goal percentage. Kasey Bostow is 13th in free throw percentage,
shooting a consistent 85%. She is on pace to finish in the top three in
school history for season free throw percentage. Sara Spears has 987 points
for her career. She needs 13 points to become the 17th player in Cobber
women's basketball history to break the 1,000 point barrier. Teammate Brandi
Myers accomplished this feat earlier this year against St. Kate's.
St. Catherine (0-12 in the MIAC, 0-15 Overall)
St. Kate's is still searching for their first victory this season.
They are led by first year shooting guard Kate Stodolka from Monticello.
She is seventh in the MIAC in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. The
other impact player for the Wildcats is Katie Jones (Fr. Alpha, MN) she
is leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots. St. Kate's is the youngest
team in the MIAC. They start three first year players and two sophomores.
They do not have a senior on their roster, and only have four juniors.
They carry seven first year players on the squad.

The Key Statistics: Rebounds & Bench
Scoring
Last time the two teams met the Cobbers hauled down a season-high
51 rebounds. Concordia outrebounded the Wildcats 51-32, and scored 17 second-chance
points. Katrina Wilberts led the board patrol for the Cobbers as she grabbed
a gam-high nine rebounds. Every Concordia player had at least one rebound
in the game. In the first game the Concordia bench outscored their counterparts
40-3. Kasey Bostow and Steph Losch combined for 32 of those 40 points.
The Key Match-Up: Sara Spears/Brandi
Myers - CC vs. Katie Jones/Kate Stodolka - CSC
It's the battle of inside/outside players. Both Spears and Jones are
among the league leaders in rebounding, and Myers and Stodolka are doing
the same in scoring. In the last meeting between the two teams Jones held
the statistical edge inside by scoring 20 points and hauling down 6 rebounds.
Myers countered by filling it up for 29 points. Stodolka was held to a
season-low two points. Both twosomes set the tone for the rest of
their team, and are pivotal in each team's success.
The History: Concordia Leads the Series
22-3
Concordia won the first game this year 94-67. The Cobbers have now
won 20 straight over the Wildcats. Last year Concordia swept the series,
winning 80-50 at St. Kate's and 100-36 at home. In the second game Kasey
Bostow had a career-high 25 points. In the three games she has played against
the Wildcats, Katrina Wilberts has been the leading rebounder twice and
averaged nine rpg.
