2/5 Concordia Powers By Gustavus
76-58.
Concordia used a strong first half to power by Gustavus 76-58. The
Cobbers outscored the Gusties 40-22 in the opening 20 minutes, but played
in spurts in the second half to earn their 16th win on the year and clinch
a berth in the inaugural MIAC playoff tournament. Concordia (14-3,
16-4) placed five players in double figures, and for the third straight
game was led by Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) who finished with 15. Gustavus
(87-8, 11-8) was paced by the inside duo of Kelly Etzel and Tricia Niebuhr.
Etzel finished with a game-high 16 points, while Niebuhr finished with
10 points and a game-hig 12 rebounds.
Concordia came out in the first half, and took control of the tempo right away. After the teams traded baskets through the first four minutes, the Cobbers went on a 24-8 run over the next ten minutes, and went into the break with an 18 point lead. Spears and Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) pushed the Cobbers in the first half by scoring 19 points. Concordia shot 45 percent in the opening period as opposed to Gustavus' 34 percent.
Gustavus came out in the second half and cut quickly into the lead. They outscored Concordia 17-3 in the opening seven minutes of the half, and cut the lead to seven at 46-39. The run would be halted, and that was as close as they would get. The Cobbers used strong senior leadership to push the lead back to double digits and eventually wear the Gusties down. Senior Steph Losch (Hallock,, MN), playing bigger than her 5-9 frame, collected a team-high 10 rebounds and four steals. Fellow senior Sarah Jacobson (Fargo, ND) put in several key baskets in the second half and played well spelling Trisha Steinborn (Fr., Jamestown, ND) at the point.
With the victory, Concordia clinches a berth in the first-ever MIAC women's playoff tournament. Concordia goes on the road to finish their string of three clutch MIAC games when they face St. Thomas on Wednesday.

Concordia vs. Gustavus Game Day Preview
The Headline: Concordia Looking to Rebound
The Teams:
Concordia (13-3 in the MIAC, 15-4 Overall)
The Cobbers are coming off their first loss in their last nine games.
On Saturday they dropped an exciting 79-70 decision to Carleton.
The game was played in runs with both teams reeling off multiple point
strings. Sara Spears, as she has for the last three games, led the
Cobbers with 22 points and 12 rebounds. She has seven double-doubles on
the year and is ninth on the all-time Concordia list for career rebounds
and 15th in scoring. Brandi Myers continues to lead the MIAC in scoring
with a 18.19 conference average She was the MIAC Player of the Week
last week. Concordia is in the middle of a three-game stretch that will
determine their order of finish in the MIAC race. The stretch is Carleton-Gustavus-St.
Thomas, three of the top five teams in the MIAC. Today's game could be
a possible first round MIAC playoff match-up as well. If the season ended
today the teams would face each other in the opening round, as the #4 team
hosts the #5 team.
Gustavus (8-7 in the MIAC, 11-7 Overall)
Gustavus is playing out the title of a classic Clint Eastwood movie
- "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". "The Good", after today they finish
the MIAC season with five games against teams that are underneath them
in the standings - they hold an 8-0 record against such teams. "The Bad",
they have lost three of the last four games. "The Ugly", Gustavus is 0-7
against the teams that are ahead of them in the conference. The Gusties
are led by a double threat. Tricia Niebuhr (Sr., Gibbon, MN) leads the
team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg). Kelly Etzel
(So., Hamel, MN) is close behind in scoring at 12.6 ppg and rebounding
with 7.0 rpg. Niebuhr was the MIAC player of the week in November.
