2/15 Concordia Goes Wire-to-Wire
to Stymie St. Ben's 85-72.
Concordia never trailed in the game, and used a clinical first half
to beat St. Ben's 85-72. The win gives the Cobbers a sweep of the series
with Blazers for the first time since the 1993-94 season. Concordia (15-5,
17-6) shot 68 percent (19-for-28) in the first half and bolted to a 21-point
lead at the break. St. Ben's (17-3, 19-4), down by as many as 29 in the
second half, tried to rally midway through the period, but could get no
closer than four and their fierce comeback came up short in the final minutes
of the game.
Concordia's Mandy Berggren, shaking off a thigh injury, sparked Concordia by coming off the bench to score a team-high 21 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. As a team, the Cobbers shot 52 percent (10-for-19) from beyond the arc and 57 percent (33-for-58) from the field. St. Ben's could never get into an offensive rhythm despite getting a game-high 25 points from Michelle Barlau. Concordia held St. Ben's to 35 percent (23-for-64) shooting from the field, and limited the number of second-chance opportunities the entire game.
St. Ben's came into the game tied for first place in the MIAC and ranked 12th in the nation by D3Hoops.com. Concordia defeated the Blazers earlier this year in St. Joseph for the first time since 1996.
Concordia put five player in double figures in scoring. Besides Berggren, the other Cobber players scoring over 10 were; Brandi Myers (Sr, Glyndon, MN) with 16, Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) with 15, Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) added 13 and Steph Losch (Sr., Hallock, MN) put up 11. Bostow also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to miss a double-double by one.
Concordia will finish the regular season on Saturday when they host
Bethel at 1:00. They will turn around and host a first-round MIAC tournament
game on Monday at 7:30 against the team that finishes in the fifth spot.

Concordia vs. St. Ben's Game Day Preview
The Headline: Cobbers Gear Up For Playoffs
The Teams:
Concordia (14-5 in the MIAC, 16-6 Overall)
Concordia comes into tonight's game on a rare two-game losing streak.
On Monday the Cobbers were stunned by St. Mary's 75-64. In that game Brandi
Myers, the league's second leading, scorer was held to just three points.
That total is the fewest points she has scored in two years. To make matters
worse, the Cobbers' bus broke down outside of Rothsay and the team
didn't arrive back on campus until 5:00 am. Concordia will have one regular
season game left after tonight, a home game against Bethel on Saturday
at 1:00. The MIAC tournament begins on Monday night, and the Cobbers will
host a game at 7:30 against Augsburg, St. Mary's or Gustavus.
St. Ben’s (17-2 in the MIAC, 19-3 Overall)
St. Ben's is in the "drivers seat" for the MIAC championship. If they
win their two remaining games, they will assure themselves of a tie for
the title and home court advantage throughout the MIAC tournament. The
tandem of Michelle Barlau and Andrea Bennett leads the Blazers. Barlau
leads the team in scoring and Bennett is the leading rebounder. One of
the most inspirational stories in the MIAC this year is Barlau's amazing
comeback from a broken neck last year. She was confined to wearing a neck
halo for two months after she fainted and fell in the shower. She has gone
through countless hours of rehabilitation to quickly recover from the terrible
accident that happened only last February.

The Key Statistic: Rebounding
In last month's 71-55 victory over St. Ben's, the Cobbers held a 47-28
advantage in rebounds. Rebounding is the only offensive statistic that
the Blazers are not in the top three in the MIAC. They are currently ranked
ninth in the category. They also do not have a player in the top 15 of
the conference in individual rebounding. St. Ben's has lost twice in the
MIAC and both times they lost the battle of the glass by over 10 rebounds.
The Cobbers are fourth in the MIAC in rebounding. The biggest insight might
be Concordia's rebounding record against the top three teams in the
MIAC. They are 1-4 against the upper echelon when they stay even in rebounding,
and 1-0 when they pound the glass and hold a decisive edge.
The Key Match-Up: Trisha Steinborn-CC
vs. Michelle Barlau-CSB
The battle of the youngsters at the point-of-attack. In Concordia's
win against St. Ben's, first year player Trisha Steinborn played one of
her best games of her young college career. She came away with 11 points
and only 1 turnover in 24 minutes of play. She handled the pressure and
was able to create offensively for herself and other players. In the last
five games she has turned the ball over 25 times and the Cobbers are 2-3
in that stretch. Michelle Barlau is one of the best players in the league
and she is only a sophomore. She is the Blazers team leader in scoring,
and currently sits in third in league scoring behind Myers and Laura Jacobs
of Bethel. She is a threat from the point because of her ability to drive
and dish.
The History: St. Ben's Leads the Series
21-16
The win in January broke a streak of seven straight losses for Concordia
that dated back to the 1996-97 season. The Cobbers dominated the beginning
of the series, winning 11 of the first 14 games. The Blazers have returned
the favor by winning 11 of the last 14 games.
