Season Outlook and Notes:
When head coach Duane Siverson looks at the 2000-01 Concordia men's
basketball roster, he sees potential. Potential to make a run at the top
of the MIAC and potential to struggle to find consistency. This attitude
stems from the fact that Siverson returns four starters from a team that
finished fifth in the regular season in 2000-01, and then knocked off St.
Thomas in the first round of the MIAC playoffs. Yet at the same time,
the team lost their leading scorer from a year ago and the MIAC's Sixth
Man of the Year. Joe Snowden (Roseville, Minn.) led the Cobbers from the
outside, averaging 17 points per game while Kermit Cooper (Freeport, Bah.)
came off the bench to lead the Cobbers in rebounding. So, despite a strong
nucleus of returning players, the Cobbers will need to find scoring and
a presence underneath the basket.
The returning core of starters consists of guard Robb Flint (Sr., Dilworth, Minn.), forwards Chris Thomas (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.Dak.) and Mike Syverson (Sr., Twin Valley, Minn.) and center Jeff Ubben (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.). Ubben was second on the team in scoring with a 12.5 points per game average, while Thomas and Syverson combined for 15 points per game. Flint led the team in assists and was fifth in scoring. The year of experience will help all four and if they can remain injury-free, then the Cobbers will have a solid foundation to make a strong run through the MIAC.
The team will be bolstered by the addition of size and quickness. The size will be John Breneman (Jr., Roseville, Minn.), a transfer from NCAA Division II North Dakota State. The 6-7 250 pound Breneman will give the Cobbers an immediate presence underneath. His size and ability to score in a crowd will help the team deal with some of the MIAC's toughest teams. The speed will come from the agile legs of guard DonnieGroce (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.). Groce spent the last two years working in Minneapolis after competing at North Dakota School of Science in Wahpeton, N.Dak. He will bring much-needed maturity and quickness to the Cobber backcourt.
If the Cobbers can get through the first part of the season without completely falling down, then they have an opportunity to improve on their sixth-place finish from a year ago. Finding the right blend of players will be the key to the Cobbers success in 2001-02.
An In-Depth Look at the Cobers for 2001-2002:
Position-by-Position Breakdown:
Guards -
Robb Flint will be back to run the point for Concordia. The year of
college experience he gained from last season will help him flourish offensively
and defensively. His quickness and first step to the basket will help keep
opposing defenses from pressing the Cobbers in their half court offense.
Joining Flint in the backcourt will be Donnie Groce. Groce with his lightning
fast first step will give the Cobbers one of the quickest backcourts in
the league. Adding depth at the guard position will be Kevin Gilchrest
(So., Seattle, Wash.), Luke Karlgaard (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) and Nathan
Ohme (So., Bloomington, Minn.).
Forwards-
Syverson and Thomas will start at the forward positions but this will
be a source of considerable depth for Siverson. He will have the option
of going big or small depending on the situation. He can go smaller with
a pair of 6-3 players in Trent Hagen (Jr., Pelican Rapids, Minn.) and Tom
Lybeck (So., Fargo, N.Dak.). The full-size forward edition will feature
Marcus Williams (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.), Soren Nelson (Fr., Twin Valley,
Minn.) and Chris Wermerson (Fr., Brandon, S.Dak.) . Siverson also has the
option of playing John Breneman at forward when Jeff Ubben is at center
to give the Cobbers a "twin tower" look.
Centers -
Ubben and Breneman will be the anchors of the middle. They both possess
size and the ability to go to the basket in a crowd. Ubben is looking to
regain the form of 1999-00 when he was an all-conference honorable mention
selection. The key for Ubben will be to remain healthy. Last season, despite
playing in 24 of the 25 games, he was hampered by nagging injuries that
kept him from going through a full season of practices. His unorthodox
style of play will help the Cobbers consistently score points in the paint.
Breneman will be the unknown factor in the Cobber's equation. He will offer
size and a physical presence with a deft scoring touch. Siverson will have
to decide where to put Breneman on the court to utilize all of his abilities.
