Season Outlook and Notes:
Season Preview:
The 2002-03 Concordia women's basketball team will take on the characteristics
of a classic car that just had the chassis refinished and painted. First-year
head coach Troy Odegaard inherits a team that will look good from the outside,
but he will have to wait for the season to start to see if there is any
power left underneath.
The Cobbers have nine guards on the roster and will have depth in the backcourt beyond their wildest dreams. The key for the Cobbers will be to find the right combination around the basket. Concordia lost only one starter from last year's team that finished tied for fourth and narrowly missed out on the MIAC playoffs. Three of the returning four starters had terrific seasons in 2001-02, and hopefully they will be able to build off the success they had last season.
Offensively, Concordia will feature a strong point guard and experienced post player. Last year Mandy Pearson used her first year in the college ranks to showcase her ball handling skills and get accustomed to the high-pressure game of the MIAC. For her efforts she was named to the All-MIAC First-Year Team, All-MIAC Defensive Team and All-Conference Honorable Mention Team. Her ability to shoot and score consistently will have a direct effect on how far Concordia can go in 2002-03. The inside force for Concordia will be senior Kasey Bostow. Bostow is a returning all-conference player who last year was second in the league in scoring with an 18.4 points per game average. She will have to continue to thrive despite being the Cobbers' primary weapon underneath.
Last year Concordia was helped by the emergence of Debbie Slack as a legitimate rebounding force in the college game. Slack steadily improved throughout the season and eventually led the MIAC in rebounding with an 8.8 rebound per game average. Head Coach Odegaard will be looking for a more balanced game from Slack in 2002-03 to take some of the scoring burden off of frontcourt mate Bostow.
One of the keys for the Cobbers will be to find a way to offset the loss of all-conference guard Mandy Berggren. Berggren graduated in the spring and took with her a serious outside scoring threat, having finished sixth in the league in 2001-02 with a 16.0 ppg average. One of the leading candidates for that position is NCAA Division II transfer Jamie Stensgard. Stensgard transferred from cross-town powerhouse North Dakota State University. Before playing for the Bison she was a high school standout for Oak Grove in Fargo.
Other players who could fill the scoring vacancy left by Berggren include Jamie Visness who struggled in her first-year but continues to be one of the hottest shooters in the preseason. Junior Trisha Steinborn has shown the ability to shoot from beyond the 3-point arc in her first two seasons and will have to continue to stretch opposing defenses in order to open up space for the Cobber interior players.
The Cobbers do possess a trio of inside players who can give quality minutes whenever they are called upon. Juniors Becky Fitch and Beth Drager along with sophomore Gretta Stritesky can add much-needed size to the Concordia line-up. In the end, Odegaard will be hoping that one of the three can step up and prove to be an offensive and defensive inside force.
If Odegaard can get all the gears to mesh in the Cobber engine, then come March he could be driving a vintage Cobber classic that drives as good as it looks.
