5/01 Former Cobber Great Named New Head Basketball Coach.

Jessica Rahman
Was named the 9th head coach in Concordia women's basketball history.

MOORHEAD---Concordia College Moorhead Athletic Director Dr. Armin Pipho announced today that Jessica Rahman has been named the new head women's basketball coach. Rahman, formerly Jessica Beachy, was a four-time All-American standout at Concordia and helped the Cobbers win the national championship in the 1987-88 season. She is the school's all-time leading scorer and was inducted into the Concordia Athletic hall of Fame in 1998. Rahman has been the head girl's coach at St. Cloud Tech High School since 1999.

Rahman becomes the ninth head coach in the history of Concordia women's basketball, replacing Troy Odegaard, who compiled a 13-13 record in his one year as head coach. (More)

2/24 Cobbers End Their Season With 74-57 Loss at St. Ben's.

Scored a team-high 17 points in Concordia's 74-57 playoff loss at St. Ben's.

(ST. JOSEPH, MINN) --- Concordia replayed an unfortunate, reoccurring theme in their MIAC playoff game with St. Ben's. Trailing by only two points at halftime, the Cobbers were outscored 15-2 in the first 3:31 of the second period and ended up losing 74-57. In the Cobbers' final three losses of the season they were outscored by a combined 60-10 margin coming out of the halftime break. With the loss, Concordia ends the season with a 13-13 overall record. St. Ben's (23-2) advances to play at Gustavus in the semifinals of the MIAC playoffs on Wednesday, February 26.

Michelle Barlau scored a game-high 34 points for the Blazers. She has now scored 88 points (29.3 ppg) in her last three games. Kasey Bostow (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) finished off her career in a Concordia uniform by putting up a team-high 17 points. She finishes her four years as a Cobber with 1,311 points - sixth on the school's all-time scoring list. Trisha Steinborn (Jr., Jamestown, N.D.) was the only other Concordia player in double-figures. Steinborn, who was 3-for-7 from 3-point range, finished the game with 13 points.

The Cobbers, hoping to slow down the Blazers potent offensive attack, started the game by opening up a 7-4 lead, and held a 17-12 lead with 5:55 to go in the first half. St. Ben's was able to find the range in the final six minutes of the half and took a 26-24 lead into halftime. The 14-7 run to end the half and then the decisive 13-2 at the start of the second half staked St. Ben's to a 13-point lead with 16 minutes left in the game. Concordia was able to get to within 10 at 47-37 with 12:58 to play. Barlau came down and hit a 3-point field goal on the ensuing possession which sparked the Blazers to a 7-0 run and helped put the game out of reach.

Kim Johnson and Anna Heikenen also played an important part of the Blazers' 17-point victory. Johnson finished with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Heikenen added 11 points and six rebounds.

Concordia's Debbie Slack (Jr., Evansville, Minn.), known more for her rebounding than scoring, had more points than rebounds. She finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds.

MINNEAPOLIS (2/19/03) -- Kasey Bostow (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) led all scorers with 18 points, leading Concordia College-Moorhead to a 62-53 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Debbie Slack (Jr., Evansville, Minn.) added eight points, 13 rebounds and four steals for the Cobbers, who clinched a berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs with the win, finishing the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and 11-11 MIAC mark.

Augsburg has lost 14 games in a row to fall to 4-20 overall and 3-17 in MIAC play. Augsburg finishes its season on Saturday (2/22) with a 3 p.m. game at St. Catherine.

The game was a close one early, as every Concordia rally was matched by one from Augsburg. The Cobbers led 31-26 at halftime.

However, after Augsburg took a 32-31 lead on two straight three-pointers by Ashley Vossen (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) in the first two minutes of the second half, the Cobbers went on a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes, taking a commanding 10-point, 46-36 lead with 11:12 remaining. Beth Drager (Jr., Wood Lake, Minn./Lakeview HS) had six points in the Cobber run. The Auggies could not cut the lead under seven points the rest of the way.

Drager had 11 points and five rebounds for the Cobbers, while Trisha Steinborn (Jr., Jamestown, N.D.) had nine points, four asssits and two steals. Jamie Stensgard(So., Fargo, N.D./Oak Grove HS) had seven points and five steals.

Augsburg committed 25 turnovers, the 17th time this season Augsburg has committed 19 or more miscues. Concordia converted 25 points off of Augsburg turnovers, compared to 11 Augsburg points converted off of 18 Concordia turnovers.

The Auggies were paced by Vossen, who hit four 3-pointers to score a career-high 17 points as the lone Auggie in double figures. She also had four steals. Rosinta Stromquist (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had eight points, Missy Larson (Fr., Pine Island, Minn.) had six points and six rebounds, and Ashley Sasek (So., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had five points and four steals.

Julie Andert (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had a team-high 10 rebounds, and Shannon Spears (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), Augsburg's lone senior, closed her career with a four-point, four-rebound effort.

2/09 Jamie Visness Named MIAC Co-Player of the Week.
Concordia women's basketball player Jamie Visness (So., Hallock, Minn./Kittson Central HS) was named MIAC Co-Player of the Week for her record-breaking performance this past week.

Visness broke the NCAA All-Division Consecutive free throw record this past weekend. On Sunday, against St. Mary's, she went 4-for-4 from the line to extend her streak to 68 straight free throws. She broke the old record of 66 set by Ginny Doyle of Richmond University who who made her final six
free throws of the 1990-91 season, and then her first 60 of the 1991-92 season. In the game against St. Mary's she scored nine points and had two assists.

For the week, Visness went 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the Cobbers' four MIAC games. On Saturday, against Carleton, Visness broke the NCAA Division III record of 61 straight free throws by going 4-for-4 from the line.

She broke the 13-year old record that was held by Valerie Kepner of Baldwin-Wallace, who made 61 straight during the 1988-89 season. Against the Knights she scored eight points and dished out two assists.

In Concordia's game on Monday against Bethel, she was 4-for-4 from the line, scored 10 points and hauled in two rebounds. On Wednesday, against St. Thomas, she went 4-for-4 from the line and put up a team-high 16 points. She also collected five rebounds.

(Northfield, Minn.)--- Concordia sophomore guard Jamie Visness (So., Hallock, Minn./Kittson Central HS) went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and broke the 12-year old, NCAA Division III consecutive free throw record of 61. The old mark was held by Valerie Kepner of Baldwin-Wallace who made 61 straight during the 1988-89 season. Visness finished the game with eight points in Concordia's 69-55 loss to Carleton.

Visness made her final 12 free throws last season, and is currently 52-for-52 for the 2002-03 season. Her mark of 64 straight is two made free throws away from tying the NCAA Women's All-Division mark of 66 straight. That record is held by Ginny Doyle of Richmond, an NCAA Division I institution, who made her final six free throws of the 1990-91 season, and then her first 60 of the 1991-92 season.

Visness tied, and then set, the record at the 9:20 mark of the first half. The two made free throws gave Concordia the lead at 18-16. Her last two free throws of the game also came in the first half. She sank both attempts with 2:43 left in the opening period and pulled the Cobbers to within two at 28-26.

She will have the chance to break the NCAA All-Division mark tomorrow when the Cobbers play at St. Mary's at 1:00pm.

11/25 Kasey Bostow Named MIAC Player of the Week.
Concordia forward/center Kasey Bostow (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak., Fargo South HS) was named the MIAC Player of the Week for her two-game performance in the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Capital Classic in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend.

In Saturday's game Bostow became the 18th player in Concordia women's basketball history to score over 1,000 points. Bostow scored her 1,000th point in the Cobbers' 84-68 win over Concordia (WI) in the championship game of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Capital Classic.

For the weekend, Bostow scored 32 points and collected 12 rebounds. On Friday night against Geneva (PA), an NAIA team that had already played five games, Bostow went 6-for-11 from the field and keyed Concordia's rally from a 19-point deficit in the first half. On Saturday she also went 6-for-11 from the field but added an 8-for-11 performance from the line to put her over the century mark. In both games she had six rebounds and helped neutralize the opposing team's inside players.

2002-03 Season Preview:
The 2002-03 Concordia women's basketball team will take on the characteristics of a classic car that just had the chassis refinished and painted. First-year head coach Troy Odegaard inherits a team that will look good from the outside, but he will have to wait for the season to start to see if there is any power left underneath.

The Cobbers have nine guards on the roster and will have depth in the backcourt beyond their wildest dreams. The key for the Cobbers will be to find the right combination around the basket. Concordia lost only one starter from last year's team that finished tied for fourth and narrowly missed out on the MIAC playoffs. The Concordia women's basketball team has been recognized as one of the top 25 academic institutions in NCAA Division III by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the 2001-02 season. The awards recognize the nation's highest team grade-point averages (GPA) for the 2001-02 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

The Cobbers finished with a team GPA of 3.418, which placed them 13th among all NCAA Division III basketball programs. There are over 415 schools that participate in NCAA Division III women's basketball. Concordia was one of the three schools from the MIAC to be awarded the prestigious honor.

It is the first time in the history of the Concordia women's basketball program that the team has earned the award.

MOORHEAD -- Troy Odegaard has been named the head women's basketball coach at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., while Bob Kohler has been named assistant coach. Odegaard, a native of Brookings, S. D., has served as the assistant coach the past two seasons and will take over for Sara Cepek - who stepped down earlier in the month. Kohler was Concordia's head women's basketball coach for three seasons from 1992 through 1995, but had to resign from the position due to medical reasons. He has been an assistant football coach throughout his tenure at Concordia and also teaches in the Health and Physical Education department.

Odegaard was the boy's assistant varsity coach at Lincoln Southeast High school in Lincoln, Neb. during the 1999-2000 season before he joined the Cobber staff. Prior to coaching at Southeast High he was an assistant coach for the men's team at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln from 1997-1999. He was part of the coaching staff that led the Cornhuskers to a NCAA tournament appearance in 1998 and the NIT tournament in 1999. Odegaard was also a graduate assistant and assistant coach for the South Dakota State men's team from 1995 - 1997. He received his undergraduate degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. in 1986 and his master's degree from SDSU in Brookings, S.D.

4/08 Sara Cepek Steps Down as Women's Basketball Coach.
MOORHEAD -- Concordia-Moorhead athletic director, Dr. Armin Pipho, announced today that second-year head women's basketball coach Sara Cepek has resigned her position at Concordia effective May 6, the end of the academic year. Cepek is stepping down because of personal reasons and the chance to try a new career path.

Cepek compiled a record at Concordia of 30-21 overall and 27-16 in the MIAC. She guided the Cobbers to the first-ever MIAC playoffs in the 2000-01, where the team won an opening round game over Gustavus before falling to St. Thomas in the semifinals. | Complete Details |
