Cobbers Rally to Take Sweep Away From Gustavus.

Concordia came up with a potentially season-saving rally in the last two innings of the second game to snatch a victory, and potential sweep from Gustavus. The Gusties used two big innings to set the Cobbers reeling. In the first game it was a four-run third inning that put the game out of reach and propelled Gustavus to a 6-3 win. In the nightcap, they hammered out five runs in the fourth, before Concordia responded with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to claim the 8-7 victory.
With the temperature hovering around 40 degrees and a strong wind blowing out to left field the two teams battled through four and a half hours of baseball. Gustavus set the tone early on, when they scored two runs in the top of the first in the opening game. Joel Nelson led off the game with a solo shot to left field and Erick Hoberg scored on a single by Ash Larsen.
Concordia cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning when Raleigh Schmidt (Sr., Tracy, Minn.)scored on a single from Ben Kvidt. Kvidt led the Cobbers inconsistent offense in the first game by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Gustavus quickly countered by scoring four runs in the third and blowing the game wide open. The big strike for the Gusties was a two-run home run by Brandon Burmeister. Burmeister, who was named the MIAC Player of the Week last week, continued to terrorize MIAC pitching by going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Starting pitcher Mike Fritz, aided by a 6-1 lead took control and cruised for his fourth win of the year.
Concordia received a strong pitching performance from Justin Berg (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) , who came on in relief of Bryan Marudas (Jr., Hinckley, Minn.), and held Gustavus scoreless for 3.2 innings. Marudas left the game in the decisive third after he was hit in the leg by a ball off the bat of Nelson. Marudas was able to pitch to one more batter and his injury will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
In the second game, the Gusties appeared to be writing the same script, as they took a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The five-run fifth was a product of back-to-back home runs by Tom Ramy and Joe Thorvig. Ramy's shot was a two-run blast. Unlike game one, the Cobbers quickly cut into the lead by scoring five of their own in the bottom of the frame. And unlike, Gustavus in the top of the inning, the Cobbers' runs were all of the "nickel and dime" variety, and they all came with two outs in the inning. Concordia was helped by the sudden wild spree of starting pitcher Jake Hauck, who walked three of the first six batter he faced. Ryan Hebrink chased Hauck from the game when his two-out single brought in two runs.
Gustavus added one more run in the top of the fifth to set the score at 7-5 and the stage for Concordia's late game rally. In the sixth inning Concordia scored two runs, both on solo shots. Luther Kangas hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the inning, and Hebrink drilled his team-leading sixth long distance shot over left-center fence with one out.
After holding Gustavus off the board in the top of the seventh, despite allowing a runner to get to third base with two outs, Concordia completed the improbable comeback by scoring an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. Adam Roberts was brought on to finish the game for Gustavus, and proceeded to walk Cobber leadoff batter Ben Kvidt (Jr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Concordia's next batter, Adam Eckoff, put down a successful sacrifice bunt but Gustie first baseman Erick Hoberg tried to get get Kvidt at second. Hoberg, hurrying his throw, sent the ball into center field which allowed Kvidt to advance towards third base. Gustavus centerfielder Ash Larsen was running in on the play to back up second base but could only watch as the ball went by him and into the unoccupied center field. Kvidt rounded third and scored all the way from first with the winning run.
Roberts pitched to two batters, allowed an unearned run and was saddled with his first loss of the year. Derek Dormanen (Jr., Menahga, Minn.), who pitched four innings in relief of starter Justin Berg, picked up the win. Hebrink led all hitters going 4-for-4 with three RBI's.
Concordia continues their pivotal three-series swing when they host
Bethel on Saturday April 27th at 1:00pm at the Jake (Christiansen Athletic
Complex). Gustavus will play in the key doubleheader on Saturday, when
they play host to league-leader St. Thomas at 1:00pm.
