5/16 Derek Dormanen and Chad Felstul Earn MIAC Postseason Honors.
For the second straight year Concordia starting infielders Derek
Dormanen (Jr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) and Chad
Felstul (Sr., Morris, Minn./Morris Area HS) were named to the MIAC
All-Conference Team. The pair led Concordia to a fourth place finish in
the MIAC with a 13-7 league record and to a 21-13 overall record. The 21
wins marks the first time the team has cracked
Senior firstbaseman Felstul finished second on the team in batting average at .393, which was the highest of his four-year career. In league play he finished with a .439 average, fifth best in the MIAC. He also finished fourth in the league in slugging percentage (.758), sixth in on-base percentage (.493), tied for fourth in total bases (50) and tied for second in doubles (9). His season total in two-baggers of 12 pushed his four-year total to 34, which pushed him past Chris Coste (Fargo, N.D. '95) for the school record in that category. Dormanen carried on the success he started in his sophomore season by hitting .336 for the season - gathering 36 hits, 22 RBI's and 60 total bases. In league play Dormanen finished slightly better with a .349 average. He led the league in walks with 12. The real area where Dormanen excelled for Concordia this season was as the team's closer coming out of the bullpen. After being moved from a starting pitching position to the bullpen early in the year, Dormanen finished the season with a team-high seven saves and 43 strikeouts. In league play Dormanen had a 3.10 ERA, pitched in 29.1 innings and recorded all seven of his saves. He led the league in saves and appearances at 12. He also finished tied for seventh in the league in strikeouts with 29 and was the only relief pitcher in the top seven in that category. | Complete MIAC All-Conference Details | 5/06 Cobbers Finish Season By Sweeping St. John's 4-3, 3-1.

Season Outlook and Notes:
Last year the Cobber baseball team was entering the year full of question marks. Their only all-conference player had just graduated and coach Bucky Burgau was unsure about his team's ability to put any offense on the board. 365 days later, the Cobbers are coming off a trip to the MIAC playoffs, have two returning All-MIAC players and one player who received all-region honors last season. While the foundation is in place for the Cobbers to return to the top of the MIAC, the framework will still need a little work. Burgau enters his 24th season as head coach of the Cobbers, with a pitching staff that returns its top four starters and the top two relief pitchers. In the field, Concordia will return three players in the infield and two in the outfield. This overlap of talent should help the Cobbers continue their errorless ways in 2002 - last season the Cobbers finished in the top five in the nation in fielding percentage. On offense the Cobbers will look for junior Derek Dormanen (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) to lead the attack. Dormanen led the MIAC in hitting last season, and was named to the All-Region Team for his breakout performance. Firstbaseman Chad Felstul (Sr., Morris, Minn.) will give the Cobbers a solid 1-2 offensive punch. Felstul led the Cobbers in hits and RBI's last season and was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team.
