Cobbers Drop Tight Game to Regionally
Ranked Gustavus 1-0.
Concordia gave up a goal mid way through the first half, created chances
in the second half, but were held scoreless and lost 1-0 to regionally
ranked Gustavus. It was the fifth time in six years that the two teams
have played to a 1-0 decision.
Gustavus pressed the attack early in the game and had several opportunities to break on top, before finally netting the lone goal in the game. The Gusties capitalized on a Cobber turnover in the middle of the field. Midfielder Danny Dietl passed the ball across the width of the field to Ryan Kaufman who settled the ball and held off a Cobber defender before sliding a pass to Eric Carl. Carl collected the ball 16 yards from goal, cut inside of the last Concordia defender and hammered a shot along the ground past a diving Kris Overby (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.).
The Cobbers (3-3-1, 0-1-0) out shot Gustavus (5-1-0, 2-0-0 ) 5-2 in the second half, while the Gusties held the edge in the game at 12-9. Overby turned aside three shots in the loss and Gustavus keeper Andy Moulton stopped all three Cobber shots that he faced. It is Moulton's second shutout of the season.
Concordia returns to action on Saturday, September 28th when the travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf at 1:00pm. Gustavus will host St. John's on Friday, September 27th at 4:00pm.
