Cobbers Give Up Goals Early and Late, Lose 3-2 to Augsburg.
Cyle Cavett (Sr., Fargo, N. Dak.) settles the ball to the ground as Adam Deutschmann (So., Hastins, Minn.) looks on.

Concordia gave two goals in the first 14 minute and one more with less than five minutes to go, and lost their third straight conference game 3-2 to Augsburg. It was Augsburg's first win over the Cobbers since 1988.

The Cobbers were able to scratch their way back in the match with a goal just before half-time at 38:28 and then one five minutes after the break. Concordia (0-3-0, 3-5-1) had numerous chances to score the go-ahead goal after the game-tying goal but were unable to find a way past Auggie keeper Chad Clausen. Clausen finished the game with five saves on the day. Concordia goalie Kris Overby (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) turned aside 11 Augsburg shots, 10 in the first half alone.

Augsburg (1-2-1, 3-5-2) opened the scoring on a goal from Hugo Quintiliano at 2:58 of the opening half. Quintiliano slotted home a pass from Mike Elcano from just inside penalty spot to give Augsburg the early lead. The Auggies added to their total at 14:09 when Elcano was the recipient of an errant Cobber pass just inside the Cobbers' own penalty box. Elcano took the miscue, stepped up and shot the ball into the far side of the net.

Concordia finally was able to slow the offensive surge of Concordia and drew to within one goal when Nwachukwu Chukwualoa (So., Lagos, Nigeria) found himself all alone with the ball four yards from the Augsburg goal. Chukwualoa finished off a pass from sophomore Zach Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.), who had beat the defense on the wing and slid the ball across the goal.

Concordia scored the equalizer just five minutes into the second half when Andy Purdy (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored after a goal mouth scramble. The goal came after Concordia was awarded a direct free kick from just outside the Augsburg penalty box.

Both teams had chances to take the lead, and Concordia missed several opportunities from in-close, before the game was finally settled with under five minutes to go. The Cobbers were unable to clear an Augsburg corner kick and Garrett Patterson stepped up to hit the decisive shot. After collecting a pass from just outside the Cobber penalty box Patterson was able to hit a "seeing-eye" shot that went through the Concordia defense and past a diving Overby.

Concordia will hope to stop the recent losing skid when they play at St. Mary's on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00pm. Augsburg will play at St. Thomas on Sunday, October 6th at 1:00pm.
