Cobbers Continue Record Start,
Rally to Edge Mayville State.
Over the course of the first 13 games of the season Concordia had found
different ways to win all but two matches en route to their school-best
11-2 start. On Thursday night the Cobbers added another chapter to their
Cinderella-like start. Down two games in their match against NAIA power
Mayville State, Concordia rallied to win games three and four and then
finish the match off in the fifth game 15-11.
The improbable come-from-behind victory pushes their season record to 12-2 which continues to be the best start for any volleyball team in Concordia history. The win also avenges one of the Cobbers' two losses on the season. Mayville beat Concordia 3-1 earlier in the season at the MSU-Moorhead Tournament.
Similar to their win on Tuesday over St. Kate's, Concordia received a balanced offensive attack from four different offensive players. Jacki Barten (So., Melrose, Minn.), Amy Fitzner (So., Valley City, ND), Kris Sather (So., Fosston, Minn.) and Danielle Schmiesing (So., Villard, Minn.) all had at least 12 kills. The dynamic duo of Barten and Fitzner led the way with 15 kills. Barten committed only one error in the match. And like their first 13 games, setter extraodinaire, Jessica Walden (So., Hawley, Minn.) was the key to the offensive explosion in the final three games, handing out 45 assists in the five-game match.
Concordia will take the weekend off before squaring off against St. Thomas on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:30pm. The match will feature the top two teams in the league, as St. Thomas is off to a 12-1 start and 1-0 in the MIAC.
