Cobbers Lose in Battle of Top-Rated MIAC Teams.

Concordia couldn't hold off the powerful front line of St. Thomas and lost 3-1 in a battle of the top two teams in the MIAC. The Tommies, 12-1 coming into the match, won the last two games after the Cobbers had tied the match at 1-1. Concordia, 12-2 entering tonight's play, was unable to respond to late runs by St. Thomas in both the third and fourth games.
Katie Reynolds proved to be a thorn in the Cobbers' side all night long as she led all players with 21 kills and continually put pressure on Concordia's defense. Reynolds was helped by the attacking tandem of Erika Wetzel and Emily Buehler. The two combined for 27 kills, with Wetzel accounting for 14 and Buehler 13. Junior setter Jane Gibbs had a game-high for St. Thomas, as the Tommies improved to 2-0 in the MIAC and 13-1 overall.
For Concordia, the usual suspects carried the balance of the load. Jessica Walden (So., Hawley, Minn.) finished with 49 assists. Frontliners Jacki Barten (So., Melrose, Minn.) and Amy Fitzner (So., Valley City, ND) were the force inside for the Cobbers. Fitzner finished with 18 kills and Barten put down 15 attacks. Concordia drops to 1-1 in the MIAC and 12-3 overall.
The Cobbers will host a key weekend series. On Friday they will play St. Olaf at 7:30pm, and then on Saturday they square off against St. Mary's at 3:00pm. St. Thomas hosts Gustavus on Friday and St. Kate's on Saturday.
