(MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.)--- Concordia made up 24 points to overtake St. Ben's and finish in sixth place at the 2002-03 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. The Cobbers used the strength of a second and third place finish in the 1-meter diving competition to jump two spots and finish only 14 points behind fifth place St. Thomas. St. Olaf won the meet with a total team score of 764.50 points.
It is the fifth time in the seven-year history of the women's swimming and diving program that they have finished sixth at the conference meet. Concordia was seeded eighth coming into the meet and was able to finish two places ahead of their projected finish by setting five school records and posting a plethora of personal best times. The only downfall for the Cobbers was the disqualification of the 400 yard medley relay team. In a conference relay event, the last place team is assured of at least 14 points. That 14 points was the difference between Concordia and the fifth place Tommies.
Emily Hall (So., Minot, N.Dak./Minot HS), who won the 3-meter diving competition on Thursday, finished second in the 1-meter event on Saturday - only .85 points out of first place. Andrea Ross (Bend, Oreg./Amador Valley HS) finished in third place only 1.15 points behind Hall. The top three divers were separated by a mere 1.95 points, in one of the closest diving competitions in MIAC history. Hall's total of 360.55 was only 9.45 points away from provisionally qualifying her for the national meet. She had already provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 3-meter.
For her outstanding championship meet performance, Hall was named the MIAC Women's Diver of the Year. Her win in the 3-meter event, marks the first time in school history that a Concordia diver has won an event at the MIAC Championship Meet. The four, top five finishes posted by Hall and Ross amounted to 68 of the Cobbers' 219 total team points.
In the swimming competition on Saturday, Elizabeth Dougherty (Sr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS) finished off a tremendous senior conference meet by finishing seventh in the 1650 yard freestyle in a time of 18:23.33. For the meet, Dougherty broke three school records - one in the 400 individual medley, one as part of the 800 yard freestyle relay team and a third as part of the 400 yard freestyle relay team - finished 13th in the 500 yard freestyle, 14th in the 400 yard individual medley and seventh in the 1650. She amassed by herself, or as part of a relay, 67 total team points.
First-year swimmer Shannon Brown (Fr., Missoula, Mont./Hellgate HS) also found success at the meet by finishing 13th in the 200 yard breaststroke on Saturday. The top 15 performance in the 200 yard breaststroke goes along with her 11th place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Liz Stuker (Chinook, Mont./Chinook HS) also swam well in the 200 yard breaststroke, as she finished right behind Brown in 14th place.
Megan Johnson (So. St. Paul, Minn./So. St. Paul HS) broke her own school record in the 200 yard butterfly. She swam a 2:19.54 in the finals which placed her 12th and broke the record she set last year at the MIAC Meet.
Kaia Slevin (Fr., Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) finished 15th in the 100 yard freestyle, with a time of 56.82. That mark is only 18/100th of a second behind the school record which was set in 2000.
The final event of the meet provided the Cobbers with one more record-breaking
performance. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Slevin, Carrie Beisel
(Sr., Warroad, Minn./Warroad, HS), Dougherty and Johnson swam a 3:49.25
which placed them eighth and broke the old school record of 3:50.66 set
back in 1998.

(MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.)--- Concordia remained in eighth place after the second day of competition at the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Cobbers have 132 points after day two, which places them 14 points out of seventh place and 52 behind fifth place St. Thomas. Concordia had set their sights on finishing higher than sixth place which would a first in school history.
The Cobbers broke two school records in the middle day of competition, and had several swimmers record personal bests. The 800 freestyle relay team smashed the existing school mark by over eight seconds, finishing in a time of 8:17.88 - which placed them sixth in the event. Elizabeth Dougherty (Sr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS), Kirsten Borchardt (So., Hutchinson, Kans./Hutchinson HS) and Holly Byram (Fr., Billings, Mont./Skyview, HS) all swam personal best split times to pace the relay. Megan Johnson (So. St. Paul, Minn./So. St. Paul HS) anchored the team and finished off their record-breaking performance.
Dougherty continued her successful championship meet in the individual events as well, by finishing 14th in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 5:02.99. That mark breaks the school record set by teammate Jenny Berg (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong HS) in last year's MIAC Championship Meet.
The best event for the Cobbers on Friday was the 100 yard breaststroke where the team placed three swimmers in the finals, and scored 11 team points. Shannon Brown (Fr., Missoula, Mont./Hellgate HS) finished 11th in a time of 1:13.29, Liz Stuker (Chinook, Mont./Chinook HS) was 13th with a time of 1:14.33 and Gretchen Nordstrom (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) rounded out the finals group by finishing 16th in a time of 1:18.69.
Concordia will be hoping to jump into the top five when they complete
the meet on Saturday, February 22. The preliminaries start at 10:30am with
the finals taking place at 7:00pm.

(MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.)--- Concordia finished the first day of the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championship Meet in eighth place with 63 team points, only 28 points behind fourth place Macalester. The Cobbers were helped by the first place finish of Emily Hall (So., Minot, N.Dak./Minot HS) in the 3-meter diving competition but hurt by the disqualification of the 400 yard medley relay team. If the Cobbers had finished last, and had not DQ'ed, in the relay - they would have been awarded 18 points. Those extra points would have pushed them into fifth place heading into day 2.The team received no points for being disqualified.
The highlight of the first day for the Cobbers was Hall's stellar performance in the diving competition. She overcame a 21-point deficit heading into the finals of the competition to win the event by six points. Her final point total of 417.45, provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA National Meet. It is also the first time that a diver from Concordia has won an event at the MIAC Championship Meet. Concordia's other diver, Andrea Ross (Bend, Oreg./Amador Valley HS), finished fourth in the event with a score of 395.65. The first/fourth place finish of the divers netted the Cobbers 35 total team points.
Besides the diving tandem, the other point-getters for Concordia were the 200 yard freestyle relay team, which finished seventh in a time of 1:44.57 and Elizabeth Dougherty (Sr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS) - who placed 13th in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.07.
The relay team of Shannon Brown (Fr., Missoula, Mont./Hellgate HS), Carrie Beisel (Sr., Warroad, Minn./Warroad, HS), Megan Johnson (So. St. Paul, Minn./So. St. Paul HS) and Kaia Slevin (Fr., Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) broke the school record in the event. Their time of 1:44.57 breaks the old school record of 1:46.35, which was set back in 2000.
The team will continue the MIAC Championship Meet with seven more events on Friday, February 21. The preliminarys start at 10:30am with the finals taking place at 7:00pm.

MIAC Championship Meet Preview
The Concordia women's swimming and diving team will be looking to post
their highest finish in school history when it competes in this weekend's
MIAC Championship Meet. No Concordia team has finished higher than sixth
place in the eight-year history of the program. The Cobbers' optimism
stems from their impressive dual record in 2002-03 and their top individual
performances. Concordia finished the season by winning their last five
dual meets and their last two invitationals. Concordia has won every event
they have competed at since the beginning of December.
Individually, Concordia has also posted successful numbers. Senior diver Andrea Ross (Bend, Oreg./ Amador Valley HS) broke several school, and Concordia pool, records this season and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Meet. Two individual swimmers have led the Cobbers throughout most of the season. Megan Johnson (So. St. Paul, Minn. So. St. Paul HS) has been a multi-event winner in duals and invitationals. Johnson's times in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly, and 100 yard freestyle, are very competitive in the MIAC - and she will be looking to score points in all three events for Concordia. Elizabeth Dougherty (Sr., Bozeman, Mont. Bozeman HS) has been the ironwoman for the Cobbers in the distance events. She recently set the Concordia pool record in the 1650 yard freestyle, and has posted some fast times in the 500 yard freestyle.
If Concordia can continue the success they have shown since coming back
from their Christmas break trip in the Bahamas, then coach Julie Lucier
could be looking at the team's first MIAC "top five" finish in school history.
