Cobbers End Their Season With 74-57 Loss at St. Ben's.
![]() |
Sr. Fargo, N.Dak. Scored a team-high 17 points in Concordia's 74-57 playoff loss at St. Ben's. |
(ST. JOSEPH, MINN) --- Concordia replayed an unfortunate, reoccurring theme in their MIAC playoff game with St. Ben's. Trailing by only two points at halftime, the Cobbers were outscored 15-2 in the first 3:31 of the second period and ended up losing 74-57. In the Cobbers' final three losses of the season they were outscored by a combined 60-10 margin coming out of the halftime break. With the loss, Concordia ends the season with a 13-13 overall record. St. Ben's (23-2) advances to play at Gustavus in the semifinals of the MIAC playoffs on Wednesday, February 26.
Michelle Barlau scored a game-high 34 points for the Blazers. She has now scored 88 points (29.3 ppg) in her last three games. Kasey Bostow (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) finished off her career in a Concordia uniform by putting up a team-high 17 points. She finishes her four years as a Cobber with 1,311 points - sixth on the school's all-time scoring list. Trisha Steinborn (Jr., Jamestown, N.D.) was the only other Concordia player in double-figures. Steinborn, who was 3-for-7 from 3-point range, finished the game with 13 points.
The Cobbers, hoping to slow down the Blazers potent offensive attack, started the game by opening up a 7-4 lead, and held a 17-12 lead with 5:55 to go in the first half. St. Ben's was able to find the range in the final six minutes of the half and took a 26-24 lead into halftime. The 14-7 run to end the half and then the decisive 13-2 at the start of the second half staked St. Ben's to a 13-point lead with 16 minutes left in the game. Concordia was able to get to within 10 at 47-37 with 12:58 to play. Barlau came down and hit a 3-point field goal on the ensuing possession which sparked the Blazers to a 7-0 run and helped put the game out of reach.
Kim Johnson and Anna Heikenen also played an important part of the Blazers' 17-point victory. Johnson finished with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Heikenen added 11 points and six rebounds.
Concordia's Debbie Slack (Jr., Evansville, Minn.), known more
for her rebounding than scoring, had more points than rebounds. She finished
the game with eight points and seven rebounds.

Pregame Notes:
"Playoff History" - The Concordia women's basketball
team is making their second MIAC playoff appearance in the last three years.
The Cobbers are back in postseason play after narrowly missing the playoffs
last year. The MIAC women's basketball playoffs began in the 2000-01 season,
and in that year Concordia beat Gustavus 61-58 in the first round before
losing to St. Thomas 71-57 in the semifinals. Monday's first-round game
against St. Ben's will mark the 16th year that the Cobbers have played
in the postseason since entering the MIAC in 1981-82. Concordia has appeared
in 14 NCAA playoff tournaments to go along with the two MIAC postseason
trips. The Cobbers have a combined 21-15 record in MIAC and NCAA postseason
play. The last time Concordia was in the NCAA playoffs was in 1996 when
they lost to Bethel 64-60 in the first round. This year marks the 15-year
anniversary of Concordia's NCAA national Championship Team. The Cobber
team that won the title in 1987-1988, was inducted into the Concordia Athletic
Hall of Fame this past fall...Concordia enters the playoffs with a 13-12
overall record which marks the 29th consecutive non-losing season for the
program..."Scoring Leader" - The Cobbers are led by senior
Kasey Bostow (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS), who is currently averaging
13.0 points per game. For her career she has amassed 1,294 points, which
places her sixth on the school's all-time scoring list. She needs 21 points
to pass Brandi Myers ('01) for fifth place. Jessica Beachy ('88), who played
on the national championship team, is Concordia's all-time leading scorer
with 2,101 points..."Just Call Me Dennis" - Junior Debbie
Slack (Evansville, Minn./Evansville HS) continues to dominate the MIAC
underneath the glass. Slack led the conference in rebounding for the second
straight season. She averaged 9.5 rebounds per game in the team's 22 league
contests. In 2001-02 she averaged 8.8 rpg in the conference and finished
the season with 214 rebounds. She currently has 217 rebounds this year
and 438 total career rebounds - which places her 15th on the school's all-time
list. Former St. Mary's head coach Kim Fierke ('91) is 13th on the all-time
list with 537 career rebounds..."Don't Send Me to the Line"
- Jamie Visness (So., Hallock, Minn./Kittson Central HS) has only missed
one free throw this season. After breaking the NCAA Women's All-Division
record for consecutive makes earlier in the month she has gone 3-for-3
to start another streak. She is 60-for-61 for the season but does not show
up in the NCAA's statistical leaders because she has not attemnpted the
mandatory 2.5 free throws per game. She has played in 25 games and has
taken only 61 free throw attempts. Visness is second on the team in scoring
with a 10.9 ppg average..."Constant Improvement" - Beth Drager
(Jr., Wood Lake, Minn./Lakeview HS) leads the MIAC in blocked shots (1.77
bpg). She has been one of the pleasant surprises for the Cobbers this season.
After playing only 146 total minutes last year, she has come on to give
the team a legitimate scoring force in the middle. She is fourth on the
team in scoring with a 7.8 ppg average..."Playoff Pedigree"
- Head Coach Troy Odegaard is no stranger to postseason play. While at
the University of Nebraska as a graduate assistant, the Cornhuskers went
to the NCAA tournament in 1998 and the NIT tournament in 1999. In 1998
Nebraska lost to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA's, and in 1999
they lost in the second round of the NIT to Texas Christian.
