Cobbers Score Six to Complete Weekend Sweep.

Fargo, N.Dak. Scored 3 goals in Concordia's 6-1 win over Northland. |
Jerry Nathan (Fargo N.Dak./Fargo South HS) scored three goals in the second half as Concordia downed Northland College (WI) 6-1. The victory gave the Cobbers a weekend sweep at the St. John's tournament. Nathan finished the weekend with nine points, the same total he had in all of 2002.
Concordia broke on top early in the game when Brandon Root (Fr., Fargo N.Dak./Fargo South HS) scored from just outside of the penalty area. It was Root's second goal of the year. Nwachukwu Chukwualoa (Jr., Lagos, Nigeria/HGIC HS) scored 15 minutes later, at the 18:23 mark, when he chipped the ball over the Northland goaltender from 12 yards away from goal. The Lumberjacks got to within one when Julian Scott hammered a shot from 20 yards out that whistled over the head of Cobber keeper Kris Overby (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) and just under the crossbar.
The second half was all Concordia's, as they scored four goals in a span 14 minutes. Nathan scored the first goal of the quartet at 53:29. Judd Mann (So., Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) followed with a goal at 55:58, and then Nathan added two more at 66:02 and 66:50 to finish off the scoring. Both of Nathan's goals came off a direct free kick. His second goal of the game was a deadball from 25 yards out and his final goal of the game was from the penalty spot.
Overby saw limited action and only made four saves in the game. Northland goalie Doug Kriener was called upon to stop 19 shots and made several acrobatic saves from shots within the penalty area. Concordia outshot the Lumberjacks 40-6.
The Cobbers will return to action on
Saturday, September 6 when they play nationally-ranked Puget Sound (WA)
at the Gustavus Tournament.
