Cobbers Persevere to Beat U of Mary 2-1 in Double OT.

Concordia rode a pair of goals from first-year forward Brandon Root (Fr., Fargo N.Dak./Fargo South HS) to overtake the University of Mary 2-1 in double overtime. The win pushes the Cobbers' record to 3-2 on the year and closes out their non-conference schedule before they open the MIAC season on Wednesday, September 17 against Bethel.

Root scored the first of his goals at the 35:20 mark when he beat a defender down the right wing and fired an arching shot that curved over University of Mary goalie Evan Ormand and slid under the bar.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead into the break and held the lead until the 62nd minute. The Marauders scored their lone goal when Cobber defender Rick Tungseth (Jr., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) accidentally knocked the ball into his own goal. Tungseth attempted to clear a low cross away from the front of the goal but inadvertently hit the ball past Concordia keeper Kris Overby (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS).

The two teams traded chances throughout the remainder of regulation and then into the first overtime as the game turned into a physical battle at both ends. The game was decided late in the second sudden-death overtime when senior Jason VanValkenburg (Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) threaded a pass to Sylvester Ndhlovu (So., Harare, Zimbabwe/HGIC HS) who in-turn played a give-and-go with Nwachukwu Chukwualoa (Jr., Lagos, Nigeria/HGIC HS). After getting the ball back, Ndhlovu crashed into the goalie but recovered to get the ball back and play it toward the open goal. Marauder defender, Andy Titus reached out his hand and stopped the ball from going into the goal. Titus was given a red card and Root converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Concordia the victory.

Concordia outshot the University of Mary 27-20. Overby made 10 saves in the Concordia goal while Ormand turned aside 14 shots for the Marauders.

The Cobbers will have a week off before hosting Bethel in the MIAC opener on Wednesday, September 17 at 4:00pm.
