Cobbers Run Out of Gas, Lose
to University of Mary 3-0.
Fighting a short practice week, an emotionally and physically drained
Concordia team ran into a determined University of Mary squad and lost
3-0.
The Cobbers could only manage a handful of chances against the Marauders, as the two teams traded midfield play early in the game. Mary finally broke on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when Shelby Sanchez scored the first of his two goals on the day. The deciding moment in the game came when the Marauders were awarded a free kick inside Concordia's box with just under five minutes to go in the first half. The referee gave Mary an indirect free kick from just over seven yards from the goal, after he deemed one of the Cobbers' defenders to have intentionally played the ball back to Concordia goalie Kris Overby (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.). Sanchez hammered home his second goal on the restart and Mary would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Concordia (3-2-1) was unable to break through the Marauders defense in the final frame and Mary (5-3-0) added a third goal with just under ten minutes left to go in the game. For the game, Mary outshot the Cobbers 14-8 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The physical play of the Marauders showed up in the final foul total. Mary was whistled for 35 fouls in the game compared to just 15 for Concordia.
The Cobbers open MIAC play on Saturday, September 21st when they host
Gustavus at 1:00pm.
