(St. Joseph, Minn.)-- Concordia lost the opening game of their match with St. Ben's but then steamrolled their way to a 3-1 victory and second place in the MIAC. The Cobbers clinched the second seed in the MIAC playoffs due to their win and losses by St. Mary's and Bethel. Concordia will host a conference semifinal match on Thursday, November 6 at 7:30pm.
The Cobbers have now won five straight matches and 10 of their last 11. With the win, Concordia finishes in second place for the regular season, the highest since the 1997 season when they also finished second.
Jessica Walden (Jr. Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) had 62 assists in the match and broke the school record for assists in a career. She pushed her season total to 978 and her career mark to 3,087. She broke the record held by Marsha Suko ('97) who amassed 3,039 during her career.
Concordia stumbled in their opening game, losing 30-28. It was the first game that the Cobbers had dropped to Blazers in the past 4 matches and 10 games between the two teams. Last weekend, Concordia swept St. Ben's in two straight matches in the St. Ben's Invitational. Last year the Cobbers fell in the opening game of their MIAC playoff contest and then roared back to win the final three games.
The final three games of the second-place deciding match were all Concordia. The Cobbers won the second game 30-26 and then rattled off a 30-23 win before winning the final game 30-24.
The Cobber frontline was in playoff form, as four players tallied at least 13 kills. Kris Sather (Jr., Fosston, Minn./Fosston HS) had a team-high 18 kills while the duo of Amy Fitzner (Jr., Valley City, N.Dak./Valley City HS) and Rebecca Shane (Fr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) each put down 17 winners. Jacki Barten (Jr., Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) was the fourth member of the killer quartet, accounting for 13 kills. Shane had a match-high .432 attack percentage. Rhiannon Grimm (Jr., Hazen, N.Dak./Hazen HS) had a team-high 22 digs and helped the Cobber defense shut down the Blazers' attack in the final three games of the match.
Concordia will have a full week to prepare
for their semifinal match against the winner of St. Ben's and Bethel. The
quarterfinal match will be held at Bethel on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:30pm.
Concordia swept Bethel earlier this season in a match played in Moorhead.
Tickets for the semifinal match on Thursday, November 6 can be purchased
through the Concordia Athletic Department (299-4434). Regular season passes
and free student admission will not be honored for the MIAC conference
tournament matches.
