Win First Round Match Over Elmhurst!

Jr. Valley City, N.Dak. Led the Cobbers to a 3-1 first-round win over Elmhurst by picking up 21 kills and 7 blocks. |
The Cobbers came out strong, capturing the momentum early in game one. They jumped to a 4-0 lead and never trailed in the game, trading points with the Bluejays and eventually stretching the lead at the end and earning a 30-21 game one win. The Cobbers again started strong in game two, taking an early 8-3 lead, but the Bluejays bounced back and tied the game at 14-14. Then the teams traded points, but the Bluejays eventually opened up a lead and rode it to a 30-25 victory, tying the match at 1-1. In Game 3, the Cobbers continued their trend of starting strong, jumping to an 8-4 lead. They then utilized a strong offensive game, as well as some timely blocks, to open up a comfortable 24-14 lead. The Bluejays mounted a bit of a rally, but the Cobbers held on for a 30-25 win in the pivotal third game. Game 4 was easily the closest of the match, with the teams trading points early, fighting to a 9-9 tie. The Cobbers then went on a roll, opening up an 18-13 lead, but it was quickly answered by the Bluejays, and the teams were again tied, this time at 20-20. The game swung at this point, though, as the Bluejays notched four consecutive attack errors, giving the Cobbers a 24-20 lead. After that, the Bluejays never got closer than three points, and the Cobbers scored a 30-26 win, taking the first round match 3-1 over Elmhurst.
Leading the way individually for the Cobbers were their two front-line hitters. Amy Fitzner (Jr., Valley City, N.Dak./Valley City HS) dominated the action, picking up a match-high 21 kills. Jacki Barten (Jr., Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) also played well, notching 15 kills. Jessica Walden (Jr. Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) had a stellar match, serving up 45 assists. The Cobber blockers also came up big, collecting a total of 12 blocks. Rebecca Shane (Fr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) assisted on seven of them, while Barten assisted on five. Fitzner picked up a solo block and assisted on six. For the Bluejays, Lisa Denman was the only player to notch double-digit kills, picking up 15. Regina Morrone picked up 25 assists, as well as four service aces. Kelly Cusack led the defense, going high for 2 solo and 2 assisted blocks.
The next match for the Cobbers will be
played Friday night at 7:00 against the host team, #1 seed UW-La Crosse.
The Eagles earned the top seed by winning the very competitive Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) for the first time in school
history. They are ranked 8th in the latest AVCA national poll, making them
the highest-ranked opponent for the Cobbers this season. Despite the difference
in rankings (the Cobbers have not appeared in the top 25 all season) the
matchup is an intriguing one on paper. An analysis of common opponents
shows two very comparable teams. Both teams posted identical results against
three common MIAC foes. Both teams swept Augsburg 3-0, lost to St. Mary's
3-1, and lost to St. Thomas 3-2. The Cobbers only played one team from
the WIAC this season, beating UW-Superior 3-0 late in the year. The Eagles
also defeated Superior, once by a score of 3-0 and again by a score of
3-2. The regional semifinal match shapes up to be a very closely played
