Junior setter Jessica Walden Jessica Walden (Jr. Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) was named to the prestigious Verizon Academic All-District Second Team. The award honors the top student/athletes in each sport and is voted on by Sports Information Directors from across the region.
Walden was one of six players named to the all-district second team. There are three teams selected from each division with the members of the first team becoming eligible to be named to the Verizon Academic All-American Team.
There were 18 players honored on three teams from 100 nominees -- including 28 with gpas of 3.80 or higher -- in District Five, which includes Division II and III and NAIA teams. It is one of the most difficult districts in any sport.
Walden, a 4.0 Biology major, was one of five players from the MIAC to be named to the Verizon Academic All-District Teams. Emily Buehler from St. Thomas was the the lone MIAC first-team honoree. Joining Walden on the second team were St. Thomas' Kristin Pins, Gustavus' Rachel Batladen and Hamline's Laura Fleischmann.
Walden is the first player
in volleyball history to be named to the Verizon Academic All-District
