Cobbers Go the Distance to Sweep MSU-Moorhead.

Series Recap:
(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Concordia received three tremendous pitching performances and swept MSU-Moorhead in the annual cross-town rivalry doubleheader. Both games went into extra innings, and in both games, the Cobber pitching staff was able to shut down the powerful Dragon offensive attack. The two wins mark the first time that Concordia has swept MSU-Moorhead since 1989.

Steph Boesche (So., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) pitched the final five innings of the first game after Gretta Stritesky (Jr., Ogilvie, Minn.) held MSU-Moorhead to just a single run in the first four innings of the game. Lindy Sparby (So., Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) pitched an eight-inning complete game to pick up the victory in the nightcap. Sparby held the Dragons to three hits and did not allow an earned run.

With the wins, Concordia extends their winning streak to three games. The Cobbers are now 4-8 on the year, and will now turn their attention to conference play. Concordia will play at Hamline on Tuesday, March 30 in the first series of the MIAC season. MSU-Moorhead falls to 7-3 on the year and loses back-to-back games for the first time this year.

MSU-Moorhead entered the game 7-1 and threatened to blow the game open when they scored in their first at-bat of the game. That would prove to be the only run that the Dragons would be able to get against Stritesky. Concordia was able to counter the opening run by scoring in the bottom of the first when Kelli Niess (Fr., Rice, Minn. Sauk Rapids HS) tripled and scored on a Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) single.

The Cobbers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Tessa Manderfeld (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) walked and then was able to score when Niess reached on an error. MSU-Moorhead tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Boesche replaced Stritesky and then allowed a hit to the leadoff hitter Lyssa Caradori. Cadori advanced to second on a sacrifice then scored on two consecutive passed balls.

The game lasted until the bottom of the ninth inning when Concordia was able to scratch across the winning run. Pearson singled to right and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Krystle Abrahamson's (Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) single advanced Pearson to third, and she then scored on the next play when Lisa Kott (Fr., Bozeman, Mont.) grounded out to the pitcher.

Pearson was one of four Cobbers to have two hits in the game. She went 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Niess and Kott were also 2-for-5, while Abrahamson went 2-for-4. Boesche was credited with her first victory of the season. She pitched five innings, gave up five hits and did not allow an earned run.

In the second game, the Cobbers scored in the first inning as Niess scored her second run of the afternoon. The Dragons were held scoreless for the first five innings by Lindy Sparby - a sophomore transfer from St. Thomas. Sparby worked out of several jams in holding MSU-Moorhead without a run. The Dragons were able to score their only run of the game in the top of the sixth when Kelsey Fehl reached second on an error and then scored on a Leah Davis double. MSU-Moorhead would be able to get only one more hit, as Sparby got stronger as the game went on.

Concordia was able to gain the sweep in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kristina Brakke led off the inning with a double and then scored when Niess singled in the next at-bat.

Niess was 2-for-4 in the second game and collected four hits in the series. She leads the Cobbers with a .341 average. Pearson went 1-for-3 in the nightcap and upped her average to .333. Sparby pitched eight innings, allowed only three hits and no earned runs. She has not let up an earned run in her first 21.1 innings pitched this season.

The Cobbers will travel to Hamline on Tuesday, March 30 at 4:00pm to open the conference season. The next home series is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7 at 4:00pm when they host St. Olaf.
