Series Recap:
(Moorhead, Minn.)-- It took Bethel four
innings to smash Concordia's five-game unbeaten string and perfect 8-0
home record. The Royals scored eight runs in the first three innings of
game one, and eight runs in the sixth inning of game two to sweep the Cobbers
11-4 and 9-4.
Concordia watches their conference record fall to 7-9, and their realistic hopes of making the four-team MIAC playoffs fall by the wayside. The Cobbers are now 11-17 overall. Bethel, after the two critical wins, improves to 8-8 in the conference and keeps alive their outside chance of making the postseason. The Royals, winners of eight of their last 11, up their overall record to 14-20.
In game one, Concordia starting pitcher Gretta Stritesky (Jr., Ogilvie, Minn.) continually left pitches up in the strike zone and the Royals punished her for not keeping the ball down. Bethel put the opening game out of reach by the top of the third inning. They scored twice in the first and second innings and then four times in the third to take a 8-2 lead after two and a half innings. Concordia cut the deficit to four when they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Bethel rallied for three more in the top of the seventh to push the final score to 11-4.
Despite being outscored by seven runs, Concordia was only outhit 11-9. Concordia received multiple-hit games from Steph Gemar (Sr., Felton, Minn./Fargo Shanley HS) and Lisa Kott (Fr., Bozeman, Mont.). Gemar also scored a run and drove in another. Cobber leadoff hitter Kelli Niess (Fr., Rice, Minn. Sauk Rapids HS) extended her hitting streak to six games by knocking a triple in the sixth inning. Steph Boesche (So., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) relieved Stritesky in the fourth inning and only allowed four hits and two earned runs in the final four innings of play.
Concordia looked to have reversed the tides in the second game. The Cobbers built a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, and Boesche continued to shut down the Royals offense. She allowed a lone run in the fifth inning, and entering the sixth frame had only allowed two hits. That is when the wheels fell off for the Cobbers. Boesche retired the first two batters in the inning and then did not get another batter out before being pulled with the score 5-4 in favor of Bethel. Kott entered the game to try and put out the fire. She only fanned the flames, as five straight hitters reached base and the Royals plated three more runs. All told, Bethel sent 14 batters to the plate, knocked out seven hits and scored eight runs - and all the damage was done with two outs.
Concordia tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. They scored a single run in the inning but could not get a timely two-out hit with the bases loaded.
As daylight quickly faded, both teams went down in order in the seventh inning.
Bethel amassed 10 hits in the game to Concordia's eight. Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) and Boesche collected two hits apiece for Concordia. Pearson went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Boesche was 2-for-3, scored a run and had a single RBI. Niess went 1-for-3 to push her hitting streak to seven games.
Concordia will face the daunting task of
playing at league-leading St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 21 at 4:00pm.
The Tommies won their 25th straight game on Monday and clinched a spot
in the MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers will then finish their season by hosting
non-conference opponent Northland (WI) on Thursday, April 22 at 4:00pm,
St. Ben's on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00pm, and then play at Carleton on
Sunday, April 25 at 1:00pm.
