Cobbers End Season With a Win, Split Doubleheader at Carleton.

Series Recap:
(Northfield, Minn.)-- Concordia finished
their 2004 campaign by splitting with host Carleton College. The Knights
took the first game 2-1 before the Cobbers rallied to take the second game
1-0.
Concordia starting pitcher Lisa Kott (Fr., Bozeman, Mont.) made sure that the Cobbers were going to end the season on a high note. She single-handedly pushed the Cobbers to a 1-0 win in the final game of the year. In the process, she helped snap the team's seven-game losing streak.
After losing the opener 2-1, Concordia needed a victory in the nightcap to avoid losing their final eight games of the year. Enter Kott. She pitched nine scoreless innings, holding the Knights to seven hits while striking out three. The victory was only her second of the season.
In the first game, Carleton jumped out of the gates and scored a pair of runs in the opening inning. That would be the only runs they would need, as Carleton starting pitcher Alyssa Honnette pitched the first four innings to get the win, and Liesl Van Ryswyk came in to pitch three scoreless frames to pick up the save. Concordia outhit the Knights 6-5 but could only manage a single run in the fourth inning. Krystle Abrahamson (So., Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) scored the only run for the Cobbers after she doubled down the left field line. Shantelle Nogowski (Fr., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) was able to drive in Abrahamson when she connected on a two-bagger of her own. Nogowski was then stranded on second, as Concordia was unable to bring home the tying run.
The best opportunities for Concordia came in the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the fifth, Kelli Niess (Fr., Rice, Minn. Sauk Rapids HS) led off with a single and then stole second. She advanced to third on a ground out, and was left stranded after Concordia failed to get the ball out of the infield in the next two at-bats. In the sixth, Abrahamson connected on her second double of the game and reached third with two outs, but was never able to score the second run.
Abrahamson finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles. She was the only Cobber hitter with more than one hit. Niess' stolen base pushed her season total to 20, one shy of tying the school record for steals in a season.
In the second game, which showcased the two pitchers, Concordia scored the lone run of the game in the top of the ninth inning. After the first two batters were put down by the Knights, Nogowski singled and then came home with the game-winning run when Jolene Rebertus (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) tripled down the right field line.
Kott was able to do the rest for the Cobbers. She did not allow more than one hit in any inning, and was buoyed by a defense that did not commit an error. Kott also did not allow a single Carleton runner to advance past second base. She worked out of her only jam of the day in the sixth inning. After allowing a single and a walk with one out in the frame, Kott was able to get an infield fly and struck out the next batter to retire the side.
Nogowski was the lone Cobber with more than one hit in the second game. Besides getting the single that set up the winning run, she also singled in the seventh inning. Niess was held without a stolen base in the game and fell one steal shy of the single season school record.
The Cobbers end their season with an 8-14
record in MIAC play and a 12-22 overall mark. Both win totals are a one-game
improvement from last season.
