(St. Paul, Minn.)-- Concordia's top relay team was disqualified in the 200-yard medley relay, the opening event of the dual meet, and the Cobbers could never recover, falling to Hamline 162-76 in their final dual meet of the 2003-04 season.
Megan Johnson (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) continued to gain strength in the back end of the season. The junior won the 200 yard-freestyle in a season-best time of 2:05.71. That time is almost four seconds faster than her time from last Saturday against St. Thomas. The only other event winner for the Cobbers was Emily Hall (Jr., Minot, N.Dak.,Minot HS) in the 1-meter diving competition. Hall has won both of the events she has competed in since returning to the team from studying in New Zealand during the first semester of the year.
Johnson also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:05.25 was only 3/100th of a second behind the winning time. That mark is also a season best for Johnson. Besides Johnson's runner-up finish, the Cobbers had four other individual swimmers and one relay team finish second in an event.
Jana Hemstad (So., Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:53.35), Shannon Brown (So., Missoula, Mont./Hellgate HS) was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (27.14), Angela Renner (Fr., Mandan, N.Dak./Mandan HS) swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (58.84) and Tina Mackedanz (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.29). The 200-yard freestyle team of Renner, Hemstad, Kirsten Borchardt (Jr., Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson HS) and Allison Lowe (So., Dent, Minn./Perham HS) finished second in a time of 1:50.57.
The Cobbers will continue their weekend
road trip by competing in the St. Kate's Invitational tomorrow. The meet
begins at 8:30am. Concordia will then have a three-week training period
before they compete in the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championship Meet on
February 12-14 at the University of Minnesota.
