Cobber Women's Hockey Recap: Game Story | Box Score |

Cobbers Explode in the Third Period, Blast the Blazers 8-5.
THE PLAYER
THE STAT
Brandie Dunn scored the game-winning in Concordia's 8-5 win over St. Ben's. It was her second goal in as many games.
THE SCOOP
Concordia blasted the Blazers for eight goals and 42 shots - both season highs.

(St. Cloud, Minn.)-- Concordia exploded for five goals in the third period and blasted St. Ben's 8-5 to sweep the Blazers in a pivotal two-game series. The eight goals is the largest offensive output of the season and is the most goals scored by the Cobbers since February 22 of last year when Concordia battered Bethel 10-2.

Concordia outshot St. Ben's 42-25 for the game, matching their highest shot output of the season. The last time they had more shots on goal was November 22, 2002 when the Cobbers peppered Hamline for 51 shots.

Concordia improves to 4-6-0 in the MIAC and 5-7-0 overall. With the four points from the series, the Cobbers climb into a tie for sixth place in the conference with Augsburg. Concordia is only four points behind the three-team pack tied for third place. St. Ben's loses for the fourth straight game and falls to 2-7-1 in league play and 4-9-1 overall.

Like Friday night, the Cobbers conceded the first two goals of the game before getting one back before the end of the opening period. After falling behind 2-0, less than 5:10 into the game, Jenei Estrada (Sr., Moreno Valley Calif.) brought the Cobbers to within one when she scored her second goal of the weekend at 14:59. The Blazers scored two goals on only three shots in the period, as Concordia held a 9-3 edge in shots.

Concordia increased the offensive pressure in the second period by littering the St. Ben's goal with 22 shots. Hannah Impola (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.) tied the game at the 4:15 mark and then Lindsay Czarnecki (Jr., Riverside, Cali./Riverside-Poly HS)  gave Concordia their first lead of the game when she scored less than two minutes later. The Blazers countered by tieing the game 23 seconds later and then scored another at 14:51 to take a  4-3 lead into the break.

The Cobbers wasted little time in starting their third period barrage. Czarnecki scored her second goal of the game, and fourth of the series just 1:45 into the final frame. For Czarnecki it was her team-leading 12th goal and 16th point. She has now scored a goal in eight of Concordia's 12 games.  Kali Palmer (North Richland Hills Tex./Birdville HS) put the Cobbers ahead to stay when she scored at the 4:26 mark, and then Brandie Dunn (Fr., Plano, Tex./Plano Senior HS) added the eventual game-winner at 5:45. In less than six minutes, Concordia went from down by one goal to ahead by two and squarely in the driver's seat.

Lindsay Kurtis (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz., Paradise Valley HS) pushed the Cobbers margin to 7-4 when she scored her fifth goal of the season at 15:55. Kurtis also added an assist in the game and is now only 11 points away from setting a new school record for points in a career.

The Blazers were able to finally plug the floodgates by getting a goal at 17:30, and tried to inch closer by pulling their goalie with 1:30 left in the game. Marya Losinski (Fr., Cold Spring, Minn./St. John's Prep HS) finished off the Cobber scoring by netting an empty-net goal at 19:02.

Jenna Johnson (So., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) played all 60 minutes in goal for Concordia. She made 20 saves in picking up her second win of the season. Kate Hall stopped 34 shots for the Blazers and was saddled with her fifth loss of the year.

Concordia will continue on the road next weekend when they play at Augsburg in a crucial two-game series in Minneapolis. The Auggies and Cobbers are tied for sixth place in the standings and the winner of the series will have the inside track towards the postseason as the top five teams in the MIAC make the conference playoffs. The two teams will square off on Friday, February 6 at 7:00pm and Saturday, February 7 at 2:00pm.
