Run Away From St. Thomas to Claim MIAC Outdoor Championship!!

(Northfield, Minn.)-- The Concordia women's track and field team saved their best for last. With the MIAC championship hanging on the outcome of the final race, the Cobbers won the 4x400-meter relay in a meet record time of 3:53.25 and edged four-time defending champion St. Thomas by a mere four points. The Cobbers finished the meet with 119.7 points, while the Tommies could only muster 115.0. Gustavus finished third with 105.0 total points. The winning total is the lowest total for a team champion since at least the 1993 season (due to incomplete records, the comprehensive winning team totals are not known for some years).
The outdoor championship is the second for the Cobbers in the past five years. They last won the title in 1999. They are the only team other than St. Thomas to win the title since 1985.
The Cobbers squeezed all the points out of their talented track athletes. Led by sophomore sprinter Angie Pfeiffer (Colman, S.Dak./Colman-Egan HS), Concordia put runners on the the all-conference or all-conference honorable mention list in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles and 3000-meter steeplechase. The Cobber relay teams also ran successful races. The 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth, while the 4x800-meter unit placed second and the 4x400-meter relay team won the event and broke the MIAC championship meet record by over 1.5 seconds.
Pfeiffer was the anchor for Marv Roeske's bold run at the MIAC title. She ran the 100, 200, 400 and was part of the 4x400-meter and 4x100-meter relay teams. She won the 400 meters in a meet record time of 56.32. That time is provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. She also won the 200 in a provisionally qualifying time of 25.14. That time is a new school record and her best mark of the season. She sacrificed her chance at top-flight times in order to gain precious points in five different events. She started the day by running in the 4x100-meter relay event. She then ran the the 400 meters, and 10 minutes after the finish of that race, competed in the final heat of the 100-meters. She then ran the 200 meters and completed her day by anchoring the record-breaking 4x400-meter relay team.
The Concordia 4x400-meter relay team of Pfeiffer, Alissa Bilden (Fr., Miles, City, Mont./Custer County HS), Amy Ravenhorst (Fr., Hollandale, Minn./Albert Lea HS), and Kelly Olson (Fr., Minot, N.Dak./Minot Ryan HS) each placed in the top eight of the individual 400-meter event. Bilden finished second to Pfeiffer in the 400 meters, while Ravenhorst placed sixth and Olson finished eighth.
The middle distance trio of Natalie Hanson (So., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS), Lisa Owen (Sr., Mineral, Virg./Minot (ND) HS) and Carrie Fransen (Jr., Coleharbor, N.D./Underwood HS) captured key points in three different races. Hanson finished third in the 800 meters in a personal-record time of 2:18.46. Owen and Franson finished 4th and 5th in the 1500 meters, and Owen captured second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:28.15, shaving 10 seconds off of her personal best time.
One of the pleasant surprises at the meet came in the 400-meter hurdles where first-year sprinter Jill Fancher (Burnsville, Minn.) claimed fourth place in a personal-best time of 65.12, which is the fourth fastest time in school history in that event.
Rounding out the point-getters in the individual running events was Nicole Plante (Jr., Fort Benton, Mont.) who finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Plante also continued her dominance in the javelin. She backed up her winning performance in last year's meet by capturing the title in 2004. Her throw of 133-5 in the first toss of the second flight, broke the meet record and smashed any hopes that the top competitors in the field might have had about displacing Plante as the champion. Plante also captured meet points for the Cobbers by placing third in last week's heptathlon with a score of 4367 which provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. Her distance in the javelin also provisionally qualifies her for the national meet at the end of the month.
Renee Splichal (Sr., Garrison, N.D.) was another key factor in the Cobbers' title campaign. Splichal clawed out critical points in the long jump and pole vault and placed fourth in the heptathlon.
The Cobbers will now set
their sights on the NCAA National Meet which will be held on May 27-29
at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.
