Cobbers vs. Oaks Preview The Coaches Concordia head coach Terry Horan (Concordia ’89) is in his fourth year as head football coach at Concordia College. Last season he helped the Cobbers to a 7-3 overall mark and a 6-2 MIAC record. In 2002 he was named the MIAC Coach of the Year as he guided the Cobbers to a second place finish. In his first three seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 17-8 conference record and a 19-11 overall mark. Menlo head coach Mark
Kaanapu begins his fourth season at the helm of the Oak football program.
Known to all around campus as “Coach K,” Kaanapu served as an assistant
coach on two different occasions with Menlo College. Kaanapu's only other
head coaching experience came at Live Oaks High School where he guided
the Acorns to two consecutive playoff appearances. In 2000, Coach K was
also a member of the San Jose Saber coaching staff as the coach of both
the offensive and defensive lines.
About Last Year: (Atherton, Calif.)-- Concordia conceded a 61-yard touchdown pass with 1:43 left to go in the game and lost to Menlo College in the Cobbers' first-ever game played in California. Ryan Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn./R-C-W HS) scored his second touchdown of the game to give Concordia a 41-37 with 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter. After both teams traded possessions, the Oaks scored on the third play of their final drive of the game. Andre O'Neil caught a slant pass and rambled 61 yards for the score to give Menlo the three-point lead. After the Cobbers got the ball back, with 1:35 left, they were able to drive the ball down to the Menlo 41-yard line before time ran out. Hebrink racked up another 300+ yards in total offense, ran for two touchdowns and threw for three more TD's. The senior quarterback had 250 yards of passing and 58 rushing yards. The 308 total yards pushes his season total to 2,256 - the highest single season total of his career. he finishes his four years with 6,420 yards of total offense which is a school record. Andrew Passanante (Jr., Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) caught two touchdown passes and finished the game with a career-high 167 receiving yards. It is the second consecutive week that he had more than 150 receiving yards. His 11 catches in the game brings his single season total to 44. He also finished the season with 741 receiving yards - the sixth highest total in school history. Jeremy Hinderks (Sr., Renville, Minn./R-C-W HS) and Chad Worthington (Sr., Bozeman, Mont./Belgrade HS) had the other two touchdowns for the Cobbers. Hinderks scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter, and Worthington scored on a 13-yard reception in the third quarter. It was Hinderks' team-leading 13th touchdown of the season. Worthington caught a career-high three passes for 62 yards. Duane Miller had three TD's for Menlo and racked up a team-high 47 rushing yards. O'Neil led the Oaks in receiving with 5 catches for 84 yards and the game-winning TD. Quarterback Frank Borba threw four touchdown passes and 333 total passing yards The Cobbers racked up 439 yards in total offense, but gave up 426 total yards to the Oaks. Concordia had 189 yards on the ground and 250 through the air. Menlo finished the game with 93 rushing yards and 333 passing yards. The Cobbers had the only turnover in the game.
Series Background Menlo leads the series 1-0 (see: about last year) The Marquee Match-Up - The Concordia Defensive Secondary vs. the Menlo Passing Attack. There will be no side-stepping this showdown, no trying to hide what the other team is trying to do. The Oaks will come out and throw the ball and the Cobber defensive secondary will need to be sharp in order to stop a repeat of last year when Menlo threw for over 300 passing yards and 44 points. This year, Menlo is averaging almost 40 passing attempts per game. They have passed their way to over 275 yards per game. Dustin Gulielmelli, their freshman quarterback, has completed 54% of his passes and has a quarterback efficiency rating of 123.37. The biggest factor in the
game will be the turf of the Fargodome. The fast track should give the
Menlo receivers an advantage. The Cobber back four of Jordan Talge, Tanner
Radermacher, Eric Preszler and Eric Svobodny will be put to the test early
and often. Don't look for the ball to stay on the ground for too many plays
in this one!
Scouting the Oaks Menlo enters tonight’s game having lost their last four games. Last week against Pacific Lutheran, the Oaks gave up 35 straight points starting in the second quarter and lost 42-21. The one Menlo game that is of interest to Cobber fans is the Oaks loss at Linfield. Linfield is a possible playoff opponent of Concordia and is currently ranked #2 in the nation and #1 in the region. The Wildcats beat Menlo 69-13 (let the comparisons begin). Menlo in a nutshell has a very potent offense, averaging 382 yards per game. Their Achilles heal has been on defense where they are conceding 414 yards and 37 points per game. National Leaders Entering the fianl game of the regular season, Concordia players continue to hold their own among the national leaders. Quarterback Brian Schumacher is seventh in passing efficiency (165.5). His top receiver, Andrew Passanante is 11th in receiving yards per game (109.8) and 29th in receptions per game (6.3). Jordan Talge made the biggest leap of any Cobber this past week. With his two interceptions against St. OLaf, he moves up to fourth in interceptions per game (0.9) and tied for seventh in passes defended (1.9). Josh Dietz is now tied for 22nd in solo tackles per game (6.6). The final individual on the Cobbers in the national spotlight is kicker Brian Halverson. Halverson is ranked slid to a tie for 14th in field goals per game (1.1). As a team Concordia is now
among the leaders in seven different categories. On offense, Concordia
is 31st in scoring offense (34.4) and 34th in rushing offense (230.9).
The defense checks in on five different lists. Concordia is sixth in total
defense (225.7), eighth in scoring defense (12.0), 11th in rushing defense
(80.3) and 17th in pass efficiency defense (85.3). Together, the offense
and defense has tagteamed to be placed 29th in turnover margin (+1.0).
89th Season of Cobber Football The 2004 season marks Concordia’s 89th year of intercollegiate football, and the Cobbers hold an all-time record of 433-246-39 …Football was started at Concordia in 1916 by Mr. A. M. Sattre. The first game for the Cobbers was against Valley City Normal. Valley City won that game 12-0…Concordia has won three national championships and won the MIAC on 17 different occasions. Record Watch!
He currently leads the MIAC in receptions and receiving yards per game. He has 57 catches on the year for 988 yards. He needs only 12 more receiving yards to become only the second player in Concordia history to break the 1,000-yard mark for a season. Head coach Terry Horan was the only other Cobber receiver to catch for 1,000 yards. In 1987, Horan had 72 catches for 1,132 yards. Passanante needs 145 yards to break Horan’s record. - Cobber quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) leads the MIAC with 2,022 total offensive yards this season. He needs 275 yards to break Ryan Hebrink’s (’04) school record for total offensive yards in a single season. Hebrink, who was a three-time, All-MIAC quarterback and owns the school mark for total offensive yards in a career, set the record last season. Schumacher also leads the MIAC in pass efficiency and is among the top six in rushing. - Jordan Talge (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) tied a Concordia school record for interceptions in a single season on Saturday. Against the Oles, Talge had two interceptions to bring his season total to eight. He is tied with Todd Twete (’90). Twete had eight interceptions in 1989. Talge has 16 career interceptions and needs one more “pick” to tie Terry Storm’s (’87) record of 17. Talge currently leads the MIAC in overall interceptions and passes defended. - Junior kicker Brian
Halverson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) has made 10 field goals on the
year and is 35-of-36 in extra point attempts. He leads the MIAC in both
categories,as well as scoring by a kicker. He needs only one more field
goal to tie the school record for 3-pointers in a season. The Concordia
record for field goals in a season of 11 is held by Chris Reimertz (’91).
- The Menlo College offense has converted 38 % (43/114) of their 3rd down conversions this season. - Menlo has thrown for 1,944 yards this season, over 400 yards more than the opposition. The Menlo pass defense is holding opponents to 220 yards in the air per game. - In a contrast from last season, the Oaks are -15 in turnover margin this season, throwing 10 interceptions and fumbling eight times, while the opposition has thrown just three interceptions and fumbled just once. - Freshman Eddie Conner is just the seventh Menlo running back to eclipse the 500-yard mark in a season. The record for most yards in a season was set in 2002, when Duane Miller rushed for 1134 yards on the season. A PEAK BACK AT LAST WEEK Menlo jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, but Pacific Lutheran scored five unanswered touchdowns to capture the 42-21 victory Saturday afternoon in Atherton.The Lutes gained 352 yards on the ground against the Oaks, who did most of their damage through the air, throwing for 325 yards and three scores. The two teams combined for 982 yards of offense on the day. SPECIAL TEAMS EXCELLING FOR OAKS A positive force on the 2004 squad this season has been the play of the Oaks special teams. Not only do they have a block in game one, for a touchdown, but also kicker Ray DeSenna has a net punting average of 31.0 so far, with a long of 56 yards. De Senna is also perfect on PAT’s this season, going 19-19, while hitting on 4-8 field goals with a long of 37 yards. On the flip side of that, the Oaks average return on a punt is 12.5 yards. Galen Perry is averaging 24 yards per return this season, with a long of 48 yards. GUGLIELMELLI HITTING HIS STRIDE Since becoming the starter at quarterback for the Oaks prior to the game against Whitworth, Dustin Gulielmelli has increased his productivity with his arm and his legs, running for 95 yards against Whitworth MARVIN STICKEL FINISHING STRONG Senior Marvin Stickel has put on a show the last three games, catching 23 passes for 378 yards and four scores. On the season, the Fremont Native has 46 catches for 632 yards, good for over 13 yards a catch, and six touchdowns. PLAYING THE BIG BOYS No one can ever accuse the Menlo College football team of shying away from the good programs. This season the Oaks opponents have a combined record of54-23 through the weekend of November 6th. At least four teams on the oaks schedule have been ranked in a top-25 at one point in the 2004 season. PRO ACTIVE Former Menlo wide receiver Nate Jackson has become a fan favorite in Denver, playing special teams and wide receiver for the Broncos. His best game as a pro came on the biggest stage of them all, Monday Night Football, as he hauled in four consecutive passes for 33 yards in a loss to Cincinnati on October 25th.
