 Cobber Defense Puts Exclamation Point
on Perfect Regular Season By Blanking Menlo 30-0.
Concordia completed their storybook regular season by finishing 10-0 overall. It is the first time since the 1969 season that the Cobbers have strung together 10 straight wins to start the season. Concordia will now await the selection of their opponent in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. ESPNews will cover the NCAA Division III playoff selections on Sunday, November 14 at noon. Menlo finishes the 2004 season by posting a 2-7 record. The game started, finished and played out through the middle as a testament to the resilient Cobber defense. Concordia allowed Menlo only five total rushing yards for the game. That is a season low, and one of the lowest totals ever recorded in school history. For the game, the Oaks gained only 158 yards in total offense. Denied their ability to run, Menlo resorted to passing the ball 47 times during the game. Concordia unleashed their aggressive pass rush and sacked the two Menlo quarterbacks on six occasions. Josh Dietz (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) made a statement in his final regular season game of his career. The senior had game highs in solo tackles (6) and total tackles (12). He recorded one sack and made one tackle for a loss. Dietz also had the game's first interception, which led to Concordia's initial touchdown. Doug Runke (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) had another terrific game from his middle linebacker spot. He recorded four solo tackles and 11 total tackles. Adam Campbell (Willmar, Minn.) continues to terrorize opposing quarterbacks. The senior finished his regular season career by having three sacks in the game. He now has 8.5 sacks on the year, and has posted a sack in each of the past three games. On offense, Concordia racked up much of their yardage on the ground. The Cobbers finished with 327 total yards, 247 on the ground. While the Oaks were busy turning the game into a passing scrimmage, Concordia relied on their traditional run attack - rushing the ball 55 times in the game. Fittingly enough, the four Cobber touchdowns were scored by the two players that have carried the bulk of the offensive load in 2004. Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) and Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) each scored two touchdowns and totaled over 32 carries and 110 rushing yards. Schumacher finished the night with 15 carries and a game-high 68 rushing yards. Oehlers bowled his way to 50 yards on 17 carries. Travis Christensen (Sr., Battle Lake, Minn.) was the third member of the rushing work crew. He ended the game with nine carries and 58 rushing yards. Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) became only the second player in program history to catch for over 1,000 yards in a season when he out jumped the Menlo defensive back to haul in a signature-statement reception for 32 yards at the start of the fourth quarter. He finished the game with three catches for 49 yards. Kicker Brian Halverson (Jr., Fargo, N.D.) tied a 14-year-old school record when he kicked a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter. He has now kicked 11 field goals in 2004, which ties Chris Reimertz' mark set back in 1990. He was also 3-for-4 in extra point attempts. That brings his team-leading, season point total to 71 points. Menlo's lone offensive statistical highlight came from receiver Keith Marin. He completed the game with seven receptions for 55 yards. Freshman quarterback Dustin Guglielmelli heaved up the ball 34 times. He was 17-for-34 for 107 yards and one interception. His replacement, Adam Hazel, came on in the fourth quarter and went 6-for-13 for 46 yards. The trio of Matt Price,
Bryan
Lohman and Kenny Wolfe led the Oaks defense. Price and Lohman
had 11 total tackles each, while Wolfe made 10 total tackles. Lohman also
had two tackles for a loss.
