Cobbers
vs. Dragons Match Recap
(MOORHEAD)-- It was exactly
292 days since the Cobbers last took the court for a match, but you couldn't
tell they hadn't played a match since early last November. Concordia shook
off the long layoff very quickly and went toe-to-toe with NCAA Division
II MSU-Moorhead before finally losing 3-2 (30-27, 20-30, 30-28, 18-30,
15-12) in a five-game thriller.
The Cobbers, who lost to
UW-La Crosse in the regional semifinals on November 12, picked up where
they left off by showing flashes of a nationally-ranked team before finally
succumbing to the Dragons - who had already played four matches before
entering the contest. Both squads traded games as the Dragons edged their
way to wins in the first, third and fifth games, while the Cobbers pounded
out victories in the second and fourth games.
Cobber senior Kris Sather
(Fosston, Minn./Fosston HS) led all attackers with 16 kills in the game.
Fellow senior Amy Fitzner (Valley City, N.D./Valley City HS) finished
with 15 kills, as the Cobbers combined for 65 winners in the match. Jessica
Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn./hawley HS), nursing a sore hip-flexer that
limited her practice time during the week, picked up where she left off
last season by posting 42 assists.
MSU-Moorhead, who started
the season by winning all four matches at last weekend's Colorado Christian
Invitational, was led by the trio of Sigourney Schaffer (13 kills),
Jennah
Goodman (12) and Chrissy Jacobs (11). The three combined for
36 of the team's 57 kills. Dragon setter Julie Vancura recorded
a match-high 43 assists.
Concordia will take the weekend
off before playing at Mayville State on Monday, Sept. 6 at 7:00pm. MSU-Moorhead
will take part in the Dickinson State Tournament on Friday, Sept. 3 and
Saturday, Sept. 4.
