Cobbers Ride the Wave
of Two Stellar Starting Pitching Performances to a Series Sweep.
Bryan Romsa pitched a complete-game, four-hitter in the opener to pick up the victory, and Matt Kemp scattered five hits over six innings to claim his first win since the 2003 season in the second game. The first game was a pitching dual between Romsa and Cory Steffel of Marian. Romsa, making his third start of the season, struck out four and only allowed two runners to get past second base. At one point in the game he retired nine straight batters. He also did not allow more than one hit in an inning. It is his first decision of the year, after having pitched seven innings in his first two starts and not having a win or loss on his record. Offensively, the Cobbers only managed five hits - the fewest since they started playing in Florida. Five different players all had one hit for Concordia. The Cobbers did all their damage in the third inning. They scored both of their runs in the third and connected on four of their five hits in the game in the half inning. Scott Halupczok had the only extra-base hit of the game when he led off the third with a double. He later scored and then Concordia added one more run during a string of singles by Scott Johnson, Chris Klabo and Brian Schumacher. In the second game, Kemp managed to work out of jams in the third and fourth innings to keep the Sabres from ever getting a lead. Josh Dietz came on in the seventh inning and, after allowing a single and another batter to reach on an error, he retired Marian's #3 hitter to pick up his first collegiate save. Dietz has now pitched six innings this season and has not allowed an earned run. He has nine strikeouts in his first four appearances. Two players had a pair of hits for the Cobbers. Sophomore Ryan Emter went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while junior shortstop Billy Denet was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Ross Hebrink had the clutch hit for Concordia. His two-out single in the fourth inning drove in two runs and gave the Cobbers a commanding 3-0 lead. Senior catcher Aaron Eckhoff also drove in a pair of runs in the winning effort. The two wins jump-starts
Concordia's record to 3-6 on the season. The Sabres fall to 1-7 on the
year. The Cobbers will finish up their Florida swing on Friday, March 25
when they play St. Norbert's (Wisc.) in a doubleheader at Port Charlotte
Stadium beginning at 12:30pm. Concordia is scheduled to open their northern
portion of the schedule on Tuesday, March 29 when they host Valley City
State in a twinbill at 1:30pm.
