Cobbers Claim Another Late-Inning Victory to Gain Split With Gustavus.
ST. PETER-- Once again, Concordia appeared to be on the brink of a serious setback to their postseason aspirations, and once again the Cobbers came from behind to snatch victory in the late innings.

After dropping their first game 4-0 to Gustavus, Concordia scored eight times in the final three innings to claim an 8-6 win and come away with a critical road split in St. Peter. It is the first win for the Cobbers at Gustavus since the 1999 season. Concordia had lost five straight to the Gusties before staging their late-game heroics.

The win keeps Concordia's conference record at the .500 level. The Cobbers are now 3-3 in the MIAC and 7-12 overall. They have now won three of their last four games after losing four straight. Gustavus splits their home opener of the season and also stays even on the MIAC slate. The Gusties are 3-3 in league play and 9-11 overall.

Gustavus came up with the key hit in game one in the third inning. After an error and a single, Ben Sherer hit a 3-0 pitch over the fence to give the Gusties a 4-0 lead. That would be all starting pitcher Andy Schmidt would need. Schmidt continued his mastery of the Concordia offense by allowing only two hits in the game and striking out eight. Schmidt picked up the win in last year's MIAC playoff game when the two teams squared off in the first round of the conference tournament. He has now pitched 12 innings against the Cobbers in the past two years and and has allowed only three hits while striking out 15 Cobber batters.

Tieg Herman gave Cobber head coach Bucky Burgau a strong performanceon the hill. Concordia's starting hurler lasted all six innings and only allowed one earned run. Herman struck out four and was able to scatter seven hits in his six innings of work.

The second game appeared to be on the same course as the first, as Gustavus took a 3-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning. Gustavus starting pitcher Matt Musta had only allowed one hit in the first four innings and was looking to put up another Schmidt-like performance.

That is when the Concordia offense started to wake up. Ben Eklo came on in relief for the Gusties, and the Cobbers greeted him with a pair of runs on only one hit. Both runs came with two outs. The big hit was delivered by new-found hitting superstar Bryant Bergeson who connected on a double that scored Ryan Emter. Bergeson would later score on a pair of wild pitches.

Concordia backed up their two-run fifth inning with a two-run sixth inning. In the sixth, the Cobbers knocked out three hits and sent seven batters to the plate. Gustavus tried to kill the Cobber rally by sending Schmidt back into the game. Schmidt stopped the rally in the sixth but then was part of the Gustie staff that allowed four runs in the seventh inning.

Bergeson came away with another double and now leads Concordia in hitting with a .447 average. The other clutch hit in the inning was a double by Nick Esala that plated the final two of the final three Cobber runs.

Leading 8-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Gustavus was able to mount a rally and pull within two at 8-6. They placed the tying run on second base before Bryan Romsa came on in relief of Matt McLeod to get a fly ball to end the game.

Josh Dietz started for Concordia and pitched the first six innings. He allowed seven hits and struck out three in picking up his second win of the season.

Six different Cobber hitters had at least one hit in the game, and four players recorded multiple-hit games. Bergeson, Esala, Chris Klabo and Brian Schumacher all had two hits in the 10-hit Cobber attack.

Concordia will step out of the MIAC to play a pair of non-conference doubleheaders during the week. Concordia will host Valley City State on Monday, April 11 at 2:30pm and then play at UM-Morris on Tuesday, April 12 at 2:30pm. The Cobbers will host St. John's on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00pm in their return to the conference slate.
