Cobbers Show Off Offensive Power in 1st Game, Heart in 2nd Game, Sweep Carleton.
MOORHEAD-- Concordia showcased their ability to hit the long ball in the first game of their doubleheader against Carleton on Wednesday in Moorhead, and then relied on their hearts and determination to pull them through in the second game.

In the end, the Cobbers swept the Knights 12-4 and 9-8 and stayed in the middle of the hunt for one of the top spots in the MIAC. Concordia is now 6-4 in league play and 11-14 overall. The Cobbers could finish the day in third place in the conference, depending on the outcome of the other games in the conference. With the pair of losses, Carleton drops to 2-8 in the MIAC and 4-16 overall.

With a steady wind blowing out to right center field in the first game, Concordia hit three home runs and tagged the Carleton pitching staff for 11 hits as they scored three runs in four different innings during the game. The 12 runs marked the third straight doubleheader that the Cobbers had posted at least 12 runs in the first game of the series. Last week they scored 13 against Valley City and 14 against St. John's.

The start of the opener had a familiar tone for the Cobbers. For the seventh time in the past 11 games, Concordia allowed their opponent to break through on the scoreboard first. Carleton scratched out four hits in the first inning and was able to score the first run of the game off of Concordia starting pitcher Bryan Romsa.

The lead was short-lived for the Knights as the Cobber scored three times in the bottom of the first. Brian Schumacher clouted the first of his two homeruns in the game to stake Concordia to a 2-1 lead, and then Nick Esala made it back-to-back homers when he hit his second home run over the right field fence.

From there, Romsa battled to get past the Carleton hitters, and the Carleton pitchers battled to keep the ball from leaving the park.

Concordia tacked on three more runs in the second inning behind a two-run triple by Matt Youngquist. Carleton then brought the game to within two when Ben Cooprider lifted a fly ball that got stuck in the wind current and was deposited over the wall for a three-run shot.

With the game at 6-4, the Cobbers quickly regained the momentum by posting three more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

From there, Romsa would do just enough to keep the Carleton hitters off stride to pick up his team-leading fourth win of the season.

For the game, Schumacher went 2-for-3 with six RBIs and two home runs. The top four hitters in the Cobber lineup were a combined 7-for-13 with nine runs scored and nine RBIs.

The second game started like the first, with Carleton grabbing an early lead. The game also had all the makings of the same story line from Concordia's two previous doubleheaders, where they would hammer their opponent in the opener, only to lose focus in the second and have the other team grab the second game down the stretch.

This time, Concordia used their will to win and their determination to keep Carleton from pulling away with the split. Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the third inning, Chris Klabo hit a home run to right that cut the lead to 7-5 and kept the Cobber spirit alive. In the very next inning, the Cobbers struck for four runs to overcome the three-run deficit and take a 9-7 lead.

The Knights were able to get one back in the top of the fifth inning off of game-winning pitcher Matt McLeod before Josh Dietz entered the game and three the ball by the Knights hitters for the final nine outs of the game. Dietz pitched the final three innings and did not allow while striking out three.

One of the key plays in the game came in the top of the fourth inning. With the Knights holding a 7-5 lead and having the bases loaded with only one out, McLeod was able to get John Hollowed to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Offensively, Klabo and Bryant Bergeson carried the attack for the Cobbers. Klabo finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. Bergeson was 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored. For the series, he went 4-for-6 with three runs scored.

Billy DeNet continued his hot hitting ways for Concordia. The Cobber shortstop went 2-for-3 in the opener and 1-for-3 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Concordia will go on the road for a Saturday doubleheader with Macalester. The Cobbers will play in St. Paul on Saturday, April 23 at 1:00pm. They will then return home to face Augsburg on Tuesday, April 26 at 2:30pm at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
